태양의 스톱워치

태양은

오늘도 변함없이 

눈을 부릅뜨고

스톱워치를

응시하고 있다.

Today as always,

the sun glares at its stopwatch. 

태양은 우리가

한번도 가본 적 없는 코스를

걷든 달려가든

혹은 길가 시궁창에 머리를 박고있든

아니면 시원한 나무그늘에 앉아

편안하게 쉬고있든 

전혀 상관하지 않고,

오로지 우리에게

허용된 시간이 되기만하면

냉정하게 스톱워치를 누른 다음 

우리를 붙잡아

뜨거운 불속에 던져넣어 

한줌의 재로 만든다.

The sun cares not in the least

whether we run or walk the untrodden course,

or whether we put our head in a roadside-ditch 

or take a good rest under the shade of a tree;

When our time is up,

it ruthlessly presses its stopwatch,

throws us into the hot fire

and transforms us into a handful of ash.

그리고 나서는

새로운 주자를

코스에 투입한다.

Then it puts a new runner on the course.​

태양은 젊고 활기찬 주자를 선호하며

늙고 병든 주자를

코스에서 무자비하게 퇴출 시킨다.

The sun favors a young and energetic runner,

ruthlessly kicking out the old and sick one.

태양은 영겁의 세월동안

단 한번의 예외도 없이

그렇게 해 왔다.

It has been doing it for eternity

without a single exception.

태양이 스톱워치를 누르는 순간

우리 모두는 걷거나 달려온 길을

되돌아 본다.

The moment the sun presses its stopwatch,

we all look back on the course

we have either walked or run.

그리고 달려왔든, 걸어왔든, 

시궁창에 머리를 박아왔든

나무그늘에서 편히 쉬었든

예외 없이 한숨을 지으며

이구동성으로 되뇌인다.

"아, 허무한 삶이었다" 고...

Then we unanimously say with a sigh,

" Alas, my life has been in vain!",

whether we might have walked or run,

whether we might have put our head in the ditch

or have taken a good rest under the shade of a tree.

그리고 우리는

한줌의 재가 되어

영겁의 시간속에 묻힌다.

And then we are buried

in the eternal time as a handful of ash.

우리의 뜨거운 피가 흐르는 육체와

한줌의 재 사이에 놓여 있는 것은

태양이 가진 스톱워치에 표시된 시간

What divides our hot-blood-running body

and a handful of ash

is the time indicated on the sun's stopwatch.

태양이 스톱워치를 누르는 순간까지

우리는 역주하는 한줌의 재가 되리라.

노래하는 한줌의 재가 되리라

춤추는 한줌의 재가 되리라

Until the moment the sun presses its stopwatch,

we will be the running handful of ash,

singing handul of ash

and dancing handful of ash.

태양 너머에 있는

미지의 나라에서

영생을 꿈꾸는

한줌의 재가 되리라.

A handful of ash that dreams of eternity

in the unknown country beyond the sun.
