John 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him,
and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him,
and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become
children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man,
but of God.
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory,
glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Flesh and the Blood of the Lord
While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. "But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom." Matthew 26:26-29
The Holy Communion unites the most painful aspect of the Lord’s ministry—the cross—with the most joyful news: union with Christ. The flesh and blood mentioned in the Holy Communion all remind us of the suffering of the cross. And telling us to eat this signifies the union of the Lord’s flesh and blood becoming ourselves as the eater.
By giving the Liturgy of the Supper to His disciples on the night of His arrest, the Lord intentionally linked the meaning of the cross with this liturgy. This teaches us not to remain merely in understanding the meaning of the suffering of the cross and atonement, but to embrace the meaning of the Eucharist—that is, faith in which the Lord’s body and blood are united with our own character.
It is commonly understood that the bread and wine in the Eucharist all refer to the Lord’s suffering. A slight distinction is made here: blood is forgiveness, and flesh is the presence in the body. In this case, there is a tendency to regard the Lord’s blood as the covenant of the lower level. Rather, the text indicates that the bread, which symbolize flesh, were shared first, followed by the cups. Of course, these two do not serve separate functions. And neither of them is superior to the other. Now, based on the Gospel, let us consider these two.
The meaning of being told to first eat the flesh of the Lord, the bread, is an extension of the Incarnation. The Lord’s flesh, that is, the physical attributes, are not different from ours. However, the Lord is the Word became flesh, the incarnation, a body in which divinity and humanity are united. The command to eat this points to the incarnation expanding to us.
The blood of the Lord, the wine, represents life. This is also shown in the command not to eat the sacrificial offering with its blood. While we focus on the fact that He paid the price with the blood of the covenant, it actually signifies the union of the Lord’s life with our own. In other words, the Lord’s blood points to Immanuel. And this was a sign of wine.
Then you will be able to understand the meaning of what the Lord said next. To the Lord, the Father’s kingdom is where His throne is established—that is, the very place where He is united with us. The statement that “I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom.” means that He will be with those who are united in spirit.
