Summary:
Paul teaches that each believer should seek to please their neighbor for their good, to build them up, not just themselves. Christ is the example - He did not please Himself but bore the reproaches of others, showing selfless service.
Teaching:
We are told to do good in order to build up virtue. To build up virtue means to accomplish good and to build, which refers to the building of the church. From Jesus’ birth, resurrection, and even to His return, the purpose is the building of the church. Each believer is a member of Christ’s body, and building the church means the growth of our faith.
Christ did not please Himself but denied His own pleasure to accomplish God’s good.
Let us not forget the grace we have received. God gives us grace so that we may bring joy to our neighbors. By obeying this command to bring joy, we become true servants of God who build up the church.
