"Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.
"In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were
not so, I would have told you.
for I go to prepare a place for you. "If I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again and receive you to Myself,
that where I am, there you may be also.
"And you know the way where I am going."
Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where
You are going, how do we know the way?"
Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life;
no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.' "But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee." Matthew 26:31-32
Why have all disciples fallen away the Lord?
The situation before the cross was neither one of glory nor one of anticipation awaiting the fulfillment of something. It was a situation so worrisome that the Lord should have prayed until the sweat of His brow turned into drops of blood in the Garden of Gethsemane, and this was not a message of the gospel to be proclaimed proudly in the early church. That night, the disciples abandoned the Lord and all fled.
We all hold to the faith united with the Lord, hoping for maturity that reaches the fullness of His glorious measure, and we consider ourselves to walk in the way of the Lord to the very end. Then, were the disciples really not like that? Peter boldly said to the Lord, “I will be with you until I die.” But that was not the case in reality. As the Lord said, he denied Him three times before the rooster crowed.
We find the image of the Lord’s cross in the event in which God put Adam to sleep and made Eve from his rib. It is that, through the Lord’s cross, the church of Christ was born on this earth. It was the final step of all of God's providence. As we always say, this is the process by which God Himself fulfills His covenant by His power in His own time.
The reason the Lord came to this earth was to make His people know the character of God the Father. And that was also the work of God the Father. We believe that the covenant God has given will ultimately be fulfilled by God Himself in His own time. Today's situation is a story about fulfilling the covenant in God's own time and in God's own way.
Dedication of faith is always noble. The disciples of that time were the same. They did not think that not only Peter, but any of them would turn away from the Lord and flee. But they all turned away from the Lord, and as if it had already been decided, the Lord had spoken of it beforehand. Why did all the disciples turn away from the Lord and leave? Rather than recounting the ages of their faith, we will talk about God's providence in placing them in such circumstances within the Bible.
When creating Eve, the last of the creation, God put Adam into a deep sleep. This meant that he did not want him to participate. When fulfilling that covenant with Abraham, he also waited for Sarah’s waters to cease. Only God's sovereign power exercised in the providence of this stage. Even the dedication of us and our disciples has no room to participate here.
By telling Peter, who was pledging his devotion, to abandon the Lord that night, perhaps He was saying that even such a commitment to life has its limits or restrictions? This idea can apply equally when putting Adam to sleep or when Sarah’s sacred water is cut off. The church grows through commitment, but the fulfillment of the covenant is accomplished solely by God's sovereignty.
But when Adam fell asleep, his ribs were used to make Eve. If we had to assign a meaning to the ribs, they can be said to protect the internal organs. Although Sarah's fertility was terminated, Abraham had not lost his reproductive ability. Even in the situation of the Lord’s death on the cross, we knew in advance that all the disciples would abandon Him and leave, and He said, "But after I rise, I will go to Galilee before you."
The Lord does not love His people according to their conditions. It is according to the Lord’s will, who loves only the one He loves. This is also the heart of God. God grasped this heart of the Lord and created the church. And the church, the fulfillment of all of God’s creation, will appear in Galilee—their place of life—maccanting with the Lord. This is who we are today.
