On a whim : a sudden desire or idea, especially one that cannot be reasonably explained
A : Joseph, I just found out some great news.
B : What's that?
A : You know how I've always wanted to be a professional photographer? Well, I just got a job at Fashion Magazine.
B : I didn't even know you were looking for another job.
A : Well, I wasn't really, but I applied on a whim.
B : Congratulations. When will you be leaving?
A : They want me to start at the beginning of next month.
