Summary:
Paul urges believers to watch out for those who cause divisions and lead others astray with teachings contrary to the gospel. Such people serve their own desires rather than Christ, using smooth words to deceive the unsuspecting. He commends the Roman church’s obedience and reputation but encourages them to remain wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil. Paul assures them that God will soon crush Satan under their feet, and he closes with a blessing of the grace of the Lord Jesus.
Teaching:
Paul tells believers to hold firmly to the teachings they have learned and not lose them. He warns them to watch out for those who reject the teaching or lead others astray, and to avoid such people.
He urges them not to stand on the side that opposes the teaching, nor to become such people themselves. While Paul expresses concern for the Roman church because of those who disturb the church and the gospel, he also rejoices to hear of their obedience known to all.
The way to discern and overcome those who go against God’s word is to follow the teaching we have received and remain obedient in Christ Jesus.
