Dear Jon Hi I am Ivan /HL5BBD living in Ulsan , Korea I got your mail last week but I'm sorry I couldn't respond sooner. First of all, I am glad to hear that you are going to visit Korea in September and want to operate D-STAR during your stay in Korea. I fully understand your desire because I have always wanted to operate HAM radio whenever I visited foregian countries during last 40 years. I also operated D-STAR several times in abroad when I went to business travel. I did operating D-STAR in India, Chezh, Slovakia, Germany, Italy, China, Vietnam and Japan so far. I started to operate D-STAR from December 2014 and have met thousands of stations all over the world during the last 3 years , mainly in Europe , US, Canada and Japan. Of course there are many other countries. Though I am still actively operating HF ,VHF/UHF up to microwave whenever propagation is good, I spend much more time on digital mode thesedays than any other mode. My favorate reflectors are REF 001C and 030C. And I also do WIRES-X and DMR too. However unfortunately there is no Dplus D-STAR repeater in Korea yet, instead we have several XRF reflectors. For Korean language chatting, we use XRF070C and XRF071C. Currenly, we are preparing Icom DPlus repeater. We already ordered Repeater controller, 430 Repeater unit and needed software to Icom Japan. It will be ready by the end of November this year. For this we already established REF082 reflector and it is also running now. If you want to use D-STAR in Korea, you have to bring a hotspot like BlueDV or DV-mega or DV4mini. As I mentioned above, because D-STAR repeater is not available yet, in order to access to D-STAR network you need your own Hotspot and smart phone. There are several D-STAR users in Seoul area but unfortunately, as long as I know there is no D-STAR user in Yeochon and Andong area yet . but there are many D-STAR users in Daegu and Gumi area. When it comes to D-STAR, Ulsan where I am now living is the most active city in Korea. So far I don't have Kenwood D-STAR machine, THD-74 . Only make I have for D-STAR is Icom, I have ID 51200, IC-7100, ID-51 Plus, ID-51Plus 2 and several hotspots like DVAP, DV-mega, Dv4mini and BlueDV. I also have FTM100 and FT2D with HRI-200 for WIRES-X Fusion C4FM, and MD380 for DMR. And there are several FM repeaters linked almost all of the nation. I will check the frequencies of the local repeater you can use from Seoul, Yeochon and Andong and let you know later. I think you can reach me using that local repeater. From Ulsan, I can reach up to Seoul or Jeju Island, almost all area of Korea using Yumsubong repeater ( Sending 145.14 MHz / receiving 145.74 Mhz, Tone 88.5 ) that is 30 KM away from Ulsan. Of course we have local FM repeater ( R : 439.9 MHz/ S: 434.9 Mhz, Tone 88.5 ) that can cover up to some area of Kyeonju and of Busan. In Korea, most of D-STAR is operated by UHF. By the way, when are you going to visit Korea ? If you have a chance to visit southern region of Korea please make the route to visit Ulsan. last May, K5MDK / Michael Ketchum in Texas visited Korea and operated HAM . He sent me an e-mail before he left the US and I gave him some advise. He stayed at Changwon for business for a month and I invited him to Ulsan and we had a very enjoyable eyeball QSO with local radio members and I also took him HAM radio Frea market in Changwon area. I hope you and your family have a good trip to Korea and hope to meet you on D-STAR or Eyeball QSO someday if possible. Don't forget to bring a Hotspot with you ID-51 handyheld and remember I am always on REF001C, REF030C and XRF070C almost everyday . I am always watching REF030C or XRF070C on the way to work during 07::00~07:30 (Korean Standard Time) and on the way back home from work (18:00~18:40). I am always QRV on REF001C, REF030C or FRF070C during the evening time from 19:00~23:00 (KST). Looking foward to meeting you on D-STAR soon. Hi Ivan,
I recently made contact with Jo (HL2DCM) after I saw him on APRS.fi the other day, and he recommended that I contact you.
My name is Jon and I'm a ham radio operator in Washington State, USA. My call sign is KF7TBB.
I will be visiting Korea in September, and while looking at APRS.fi map, I saw your call sign, and was wondering if there is DStar or APRS there in Korea around Seoul and Andong area?
My wife (Jeong-Sun) and I will be in Seoul for a week, and visiting her family near Yaechon and Andong and I will have my handheld radio with me. (I received my permit to operate in Korea from KARL recently.)
Jo mentioned that you are a D-Star user. I will be bringing my Kenwood THD-74 to Korea with me which has D-Star and APRS, and hope to be able to make a few contacts there.
I will also be using the GPS feature to help us locate the area where her mother is buried in the hillside near Yaechon. It could be a bit difficult to find otherwise without GPS.
I was wondering about D-Star and APRS there in Korea and overall 2m and 70cm availability in Korea. I found the frequencies for 2m and 70cm on the KARL website but I don't know if that information is up-to-date.
Thanks for any information you can share.
Sincerely,
Jon Bearscove KF7TBB
