"I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him,
he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.
"If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up;
and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish,
and it will be done for you.
"My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit,
and so prove to be My disciples.
"Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you;
abide in My love.
"If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love;
just as I have kept My Father's commandments
and abide in His love.
(together) "These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?
Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?" And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, "This man is calling for Elijah." Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. But the rest of them said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him. And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Matthew 27:45-50
From the sixth hour to the ninth hour of the text corresponds to the period from noon to three in the afternoon in our time. Even though it was broad daylight, darkness fell over the whole land and it continued. The Lord passed away around three o’clock in the afternoon. Today's title is the words the Lord spoke just before He died on the cross. Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
This is a quotation from David's psalm 22, which is called the chapter of the prophecy of the Messiah’s suffering. Theologians say that the Lord quoted this verse to cry out on our behalf of our greatest suffering. Then did the Lord not feel this same heart on the cross? I don't think so. I believe this statement was made because he felt as if his father had actually abandoned him.
This feeling is the same with other expressions as well. All of the Lord’s words were spoken because He truly felt it, and we should see that they have been applied to our situation through God’s providence. Therefore, we must examine the meaning of the circumstances that compel the Lord to speak these words. In other words, what does it mean for God to be unresponsive?
Judea Iscariot believed that even if he sold the Lord, the Lord could escape the situation by His power. Because such things had happened before. Running away between their legs. This short expression makes one imagine many situations. And at that time, you may have believed that it was by God's protection that He had fled. But now, He has been condemned by the cross, nailed to the cross, and is now standing almost before death.
At that moment, God the Father did not respond. Of course, it was not that He gave no evidence, for when darkness fell over the whole land at what should have been broad daylight, the centurion saw it and said, “This was the true Son of God.” However, the fact that darkness came and continued may mean that there was no sign at all of improvement in our situation or circumstances. And in the end, He died.
The Bible expresses the situation in which the Lord had not yet been arrested by saying, "The Lord's time has not yet come." And the Lord, facing the cross, says, “For this time I have come.” Today's scripture, “Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani,” is a statement made regarding the Lord’s appointed time. And what is it that you, my God, have forsaken me? What on earth does this mean?
We stand together on the Lord’s path. I believe that what happens to the Lord will also happen to us. Of course, that path is one in which the Lord is united with us. But the fact is, we too can experience the situation the Lord has faced. Like the Lord, we may avoid danger and, by being given a way to escape, not face difficulties. It is certainly God’s grace. But we must know that when the Lord’s time comes and we face death on the cross, there are times when God does not respond at all and leaves us to die.
This is because the Lord’s death is not for our sake, but a necessary part of the path of Christ. Only then does everything come to fruition. Therefore, God does not give us a way to escape, nor does He provide any evidence or answer. They are leaving them to die. This is the death on the cross. Next time, we will reflect on what comes after the cross and the meaning of its death.
