Summary:
Paul explains that God gave him grace to lay the foundation of the church like a skilled builder, and that foundation is Jesus Christ. Others build on this foundation, but each one must take care how they build. Different materials—gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—represent the quality of their work. On the Day of judgment, fire will test each person’s work. If it survives, they receive a reward; if it burns up, they suffer loss - yet they themselves will be saved, though as through fire.
Teaching:
The foundation of God’s house is Jesus Christ - the cross. A time will come when what has been built will be revealed, and it will be revealed by fire. When fire burns it up, nothing will remain of wood, grass, or straw, but if it has been built with gold, silver, and precious stones, it will endure.
In the same way, faith that is like gold, silver, and precious stones remains and becomes a reward - the evidence of living and working for God in faith. Living with such faith leaves what cannot be burned up, and this reward is like sharing in the master’s joy when talents have been gained. When we bear fruit, we share in the joy that pleases Jesus.
A spiritual person, belonging to the Holy Spirit, knows God’s plan and works accordingly. Everything that comes through Jesus Christ is like a precious stone.
