Risk assessment
It is correct to say that Saline had 16 LTIs in 2001 and eight LTIs in
2002,representing a reduction of 50%. However, Saline employed 320 people in
2001 and only 100 in 2002.
Consequently, to gain a true appreciation of the injury experience, the
fiftter calculated the injuries per 100 employees. The results were
interesting.
The chance of lost-time injury in 2002 was one in six, making
maintenance workers
the highest risk group, according to the safety reports.
The fitter made a few discreet inquiries about the injuries to the
maintenance workers and about other issues not covered in the Safety
Reports.
The result of her inquiries led her to conclude that she should accept the
offer to work at Saline Gold Mine as a fitter in the maintenance
section.
She considered the associated risk acceptable.

Risk control options for reducing work activity injury
The main purpose of control methods is to eliminate or reduce risk in the
workplace.
-eilminate hazards
-minimize energies
-apply physical barriers
-use warning devices
-minimize the potential for error
-revise and reinforce procedures
-select,train, motivate and supervise personnel
-identify residual risks.
Selecting appropriate methods to monitor hazard controls
-health monitoring
-environmental monitoring
-supervisor's observations
-checks on maintenance of control measures to make sure that they operate to
the correct standards and limits.
