61% of Parents Receptive to International Marriage --------------------------------------------------------------
By Chung Ah-young / Staff Reporter
More than 60 percent of Koreans are willing to allow their children to marry non-Koreans, showing a change in perception toward international marriages, according to a survey.
The survey indicates that Koreans are becoming more open-minded about interracial marriages, as they may accept their children’s foreign spouses but wouldn’t marry a foreigner themselves.
According to the Corea Image Communication Institute, 61 percent of Koreans answered that they would allow their children to have foreign spouses, while 37.4 percent said they would not do so themselves.
The institute conducted the nationwide survey of 1,470 women and men aged 18-68 to measure perceptions about foreigners from Dec. 7 to Dec. 22 last year.
The survey indicates that Koreans’ attitudes towards interracial marriage is moving into a transition stage, but only in terms of accepting a child’s choice of partner.
However, concerning the intercultural marriages themselves, 73.8 percent of respondents replied that they would not marry a foreigner, while 24.8 percent answered that they would.
Recently, an increasing number of Koreans are marrying foreigners, becoming more open-minded about finding a potential partner, rather than sticking to the notion of a one-race nation.
About 25,000 foreigners married Koreans in Korea in 2004 alone, especially to Korean men living in the rural areas who have difficulty finding Korean spouses.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the number of foreigners living with Korean spouses here jumped 35.5 percent to 60,214 in February last year from 44,416 in December 2003.
The figure was up from 57,069 at the end of 2004.
Females accounted for more than 90 percent of foreign spouses, with 54,533, due to the increasing number of marriages between Korean males and women from Southeast Asian countries that are arranged by marriage agencies.
By nationality, most of them were from other Asian countries.
Chinese, including Korean Chinese, accounted for the majority of the foreign spouses with 35,928, followed by Japanese with 7,609, Vietnamese with 4,145, Filipinos with 3,876, Thais with 1,347 and Mongolians with 1,024.
(1) What is your general idea about international or interracial marriage?
(2) Have you ever thought about getting married with foreigners? Regardless of your answers - yes or no – please tell the reasons.
(3) What could be advantages or disadvantages of this type of marriage?
(4) If your parents or relatives strongly oppose to your marriage how can you persuade them?
(5) (For women) What are important conditions to select your Mr. Right?
(For men) What are important conditions to select your Miss. Right?
(6) Why the numbers of interracial or international couples are getting increased these days?
(7) If you have to face a shortage of the number of brides (or bridegrooms) how can you handle this?
