Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! At the heart of Jesus’ teachings lies the mystery of the Kingdom of God, which today’s Gospel likens to treasure and a pearl (cf. Mt 13:44–52). The parables convey the surprise of those who find something far beyond what they could have hoped for, so much so that selling or leaving everything behind no longer seems a sacrifice, but a gain. Indeed, from the very beginning, the evangelists portray Jesus’ call to follow him as irresistible. It is a free choice, yet also urgent and capable of eliciting a ready and wholehearted response. This is a first important aspect of how God is near and makes himself known: encountering his Kingdom marks a turning point that does not limit life but enlarges it. If anything must change on our part, it is only so that our lives may be opened to greater possibilities, not fewer.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 예수님의 가르침의 중심에는 하느님 나라의 신비가 있으며, 오늘 복음은 하느님 나라를 보물과 진주에 비유합니다. (마태복음 13:44-52 참조) 비유는 기대했던 것보다 훨씬 더 큰 것을 발견한 사람들의 놀라움을 전하는데, 그들에게 그것을 소유하기 위해 모든 것을 팔거나 버리는 것이 더 이상 희생이 아니라 오히려 얻는 것으로 여겨집니다. 실제로 복음서 저자들은 맨 처음부터 당신을 따르라는 예수님의 부르심을 거부할 수 없는 것으로 묘사합니다. 자유로운 선택이지만, 동시에 즉시 기꺼이 온 마음을 다해 응답하게 되는 부르심입니다. 이것이 하느님께서 어떻게 우리 곁에 계시며 어떻게 자신을 드러내시는가에 대한 중요한 첫 번째 관점입니다. 하느님의 나라를 만나는 것은 삶을 제한하지 않고 오히려 확장시키는 전환점입니다. 우리 쪽에 무언가 바뀌어야 한다면, 그것은 오직 우리의 삶이 더 적은 가능성이 아닌 더 많은 가능성을 향해 열리는 것입니다.

There is a second aspect that Jesus seems to attach great importance to: the one who finds the treasure hidden in the field is likely a peasant, while the pearl is recognized as precious by a merchant, perhaps a traveler. Two more parables follow, in which the protagonists are fishermen and a scribe well-versed in both the old and the new. Other parables compare the Kingdom to a woman kneading dough or tidying her house, to a king planning for war, a man designing a tower, administrators managing payments or investments, and to shepherds and farmers. In short, the Kingdom of God reveals its inestimable beauty in different ways, but calls everyone — men and women, young and old, rich and poor — to a profound renewal. Everyone is capable of understanding it and is drawn to it.

예수님께서 매우 중요하게 여기시는 두 번째 관점이 있습니다. 밭에 숨겨진 보물을 발견하는 사람은 농부일 가능성이 높고, 진주를 보물로 알아보는 사람은 상인이나 여행자일 것입니다. 이어지는 두 가지 비유에서는 주인공이 어부와 옛것과 새것 모두에 정통한 율법학자입니다. 다른 비유들은 하느님 나라를 반죽하는 여인이나 집을 정리하는 여인, 전쟁을 계획하는 왕, 망대를 설계하는 사람, 재정이나 투자를 관리하는 관리자, 목자나 농부에 비유합니다. 요컨대, 하느님 나라는 다양한 방식으로 그 헤아릴 수 없는 아름다움을 드러내지만, 모든 사람을 - 남녀노소, 부자와 가난한 사람을 - 심오한 변화에로 초대합니다. 모든 사람이 하느님 나라를 이해할 수 있고 하느님 나라에 이끌립니다.

Today, too, the Church is a communion of people who differ in origin, culture, abilities and responsibilities. Yet all are called to recognize themselves as “one” in Jesus Christ: he is the hidden treasure, the pearl of great price, the net that gathers those who are scattered. From the beginning, Jesus called and gathered around himself people who would otherwise never have come to know one another. In this way, he demonstrated that God has no favorites, but instead offers his love freely, especially to the little ones or those cast aside.

오늘날에도 교회는 출신이 다르고, 문화가 다르고, 능력과 책임이 다른 사람들의 공동체입니다. 그러나 그들 모두는 자신들을 예수 그리스도 안에서 “하나”라고 인식하도록 부르심을 받았습니다. 그리스도께서는 숨겨진 보물이시며, 값진 진주이시며, 흩어진 이들을 모으는 그물이십니다. 맨 처음부터 예수님께서는 사람들을 불러 모으셨습니다. 예수님께서 모으지 않으셨으면 그들은 절대로 서로를 알지 못했을 것입니다. 이렇게 예수님께서는 하느님께서 편애하지 않으시고 특히 작은이들과 버림받은 이들에게 당신의 사랑을 아낌없이 주시는 것을 보여주십니다.

Brothers and sisters, all we have to do is ask for this gift, the very same one sought by the young King Solomon (cf. 1 Kings 3:5, 7–12). It is the gift of recognizing the pearl of great price, of discerning the treasure for which it is worth selling everything. While the consumer culture influences our tastes, constantly creating new needs only to sell us solutions that never satisfy, and that sometimes even poison the heart, we must learn to grasp what truly matters: the treasure of a relationship with God that opens us to joy and helps us to live our relationships with one another more fully.

형제자매 여러분, 우리가 해야 할 일은 바로 이 선물을, 젊은 솔로몬 왕이 간절히 바라던 것(열왕기상 3:5, 7-12 참조)과 똑같은 그 선물을 청하는 것입니다. 그것은 값진 진주를 알아보는 선물, 모든 것을 팔아서라도 얻을 가치가 있는 보물을 분별하는 선물입니다. 소비문화는 우리의 취향에 영향을 미치고, 끊임없이 새로운 욕구를 만들어내지만, 결코 만족을 주지 못하고 때로는 마음에 독이 되기까지 하는 해결책을 파는데 그칩니다. 이 때에 우리는 무엇이 진정 중요한 것인지 알아보는 법을 배워야 합니다. 하느님과의 관계 보물, 우리를 기쁨으로 이끌고 우리의 서로와의 관계를 더욱 충만히 살도록 도와주는 하느님과의 관계의 보물입니다.

May the intercession of Mary, Seat of Wisdom, direct our desire for life toward Jesus, so that in him it may find its complete fulfilment.

지혜의 자리이신 성모 마리아의 전구로 우리의 삶에 대한 열망이 예수님께 향하게 되어 그분 안에서 온전히 실현되게 하소서!

Dear brothers and sisters, Yesterday, in Lebanon, Elias Hoayek, Maronite Patriarch of Antioch from 1899 to 1931 and Founder of the Congregation of the Maronite Sisters of the Holy Family, was beatified. For more than thirty years, he led the Maronite Church with great dedication and pastoral sensitivity. A man of dialogue and hope, he was an outstanding ecclesial, social and political leader, so much so that he came to be known as the “Father of Greater Lebanon.” May the prayers and intercession of the new blessed always accompany the Maronite faithful throughout the world, and obtain the gift of peace for all the people of Lebanon, a country dear to my heart.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 어제 레바논에서 1899년부터 1931년까지 안티오키아 마론파 대주교를 지냈고 성가정 마론파 수녀회 설립자인 엘리아스 호아예크가 시복되었습니다. 그는 30년이 넘는 세월 동안 지극한 헌신과 사목적 감수성으로 마론파 교회를 이끌었습니다. 대화와 희망의 사람이었던 그는 탁월한 교회, 사회, 정치 지도자였으며, "대 레바논의 아버지"로 불리기도 했습니다. 새로 복자가 된 그의 기도와 전구가 전 세계 마론파 신자들과 항상 함께하고, 제 마음속에 소중한 나라 레바논의 모든 사람들에게 평화의 선물을 가져다주기를 기원합니다.

I continue to follow with deep concern the ongoing and escalating violence in the Holy Land, where, in recent days, many civilians, both in the West Bank and in Gaza, have once again fallen victim. I make a heartfelt appeal for a return to negotiations to achieve a just political solution, founded on the equal dignity and equal rights of every human person. At the same time, I urge the rejection of further military actions and unilateral decisions, especially those that violate the respect for and the status quo of the holy places of every religion.

저는 성지에서 계속되고 격화되는 폭력 사태를 깊은 우려 속에 지켜보고 있습니다. 최근 서안 지구와 가자 지구에서 수많은 민간인이 또다시 희생되었습니다. 모든 인간의 동등한 존엄성과 권리에 기반 한 정의로운 정치적 해결책을 모색하기 위한 협상 재개를 간절히 호소합니다. 동시에, 특히 모든 종교의 성지에 대한 존중과 현상 유지를 침해하는 군사 행동과 일방적인 결정을 배척할 것을 강력히 촉구합니다.

I likewise renew my plea regarding the situation throughout the Middle East, where the intensification of military operations has again wreaked violence and destruction, endangering the lives of countless civilians and further aggravating the shortages of drinking water and electricity. From the depths of my heart, I exhort all parties involved to suspend the attacks and urgently reopen paths of dialogue and diplomacy, so that the longed-for peace for the entire region may be achieved without delay.

저는 중동 전역에서 군사 작전이 격화되면서 다시금 폭력과 파괴가 자행되고 수많은 민간인의 생명이 위협받고 있으며 식수와 전력 부족 사태가 더욱 악화되고 있는 상황에 대해 다시 한 번 간곡히 호소합니다. 모든 관련 당사자들이 공격을 중단하고 대화와 외교의 길을 시급히 다시 열어, 이 지역 전체가 그토록 염원하는 평화를 하루빨리 이룰 수 있기를 진심으로 촉구합니다.

Let us continue to pray for all those peoples throughout the world who are suffering because of war. May the Lord touch the hearts and enlighten the minds of those in power, so that reconciliation and peace may soon prevail.

전 세계 전쟁으로 고통 받는 모든 사람들을 위해 계속 기도합시다. 주님께서 권력자들의 마음을 움직이시고 생각을 밝혀주시어 화해와 평화가 속히 이루어지게 하소서.

As devastating wildfires affect the various regions of France and Spain, I express my closeness to all those who have been affected and invite everyone to pray for them and for the emergency personnel engaged in relief efforts.

프랑스와 스페인의 여러 지역에서 파괴적인 산불이 발생함에 따라, 피해를 입은 모든 분들께 위로의 말씀을 전하며, 그들과 구호 활동에 헌신하는 긴급 구조대원들을 위해 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

Today we celebrate the Sixth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, whose theme is taken from the words of the Prophet Isaiah: “I will never forget you” (Is 49:15). Together, let us give thanks to the Lord for the gift that the elderly are to the Church and society. Let us also commit ourselves to respecting and valuing the precious role they play, and to ensuring that they always receive the care, attention and assistance they deserve.

오늘은 제6회 세계 조부모와 노인의 날을 기념하는 날입니다. 이 날의 주제는 이사야 예언자의 말씀, “나는 너를 잊지 않는다.” (이사야 49:15) 에서 따왔습니다. 우리 모두 함께 노인들이 교회와 사회에 존재하는 자체의 선물에 대해 그 분들에게 감사 드립니다. 그분들이 사회에서 맡은 소중한 역할을 존중하고 소중히 여기며, 마땅히 받아야 할 보살핌과 관심, 도움을 항상 받을 수 있도록 다짐합시다.

I warmly greet all of you present here, as well as those who have come from various parts of Italy and from around the world! I offer a special welcome to the pilgrims belonging to the Opera della Chiesa and to the bishops accompanying them; I welcome and greet the children from the House of Mercy in Chortkiv, Ukraine, who are guests of the parish of Saint Michael the Archangel in Nocera Superiore; to the young people from the Parish of Manerbio; to those taking part in the International Youth Gathering organized on the occasion of the bicentenary of the death of Saint Jeanne-Antide Thouret; to the young pilgrims of the Catholic student movement Ӧnze-Lieve-Vrouw Ster-Der-Zee of Maldegem, Belgium; and to the cadets of the Carabinieri Training School in Velletri, accompanied by their chaplain and commanding officers.
