Chapter 2. Lower Scripture(下經,하경) 24 Teachings(訓,훈) 156 Matters(事,사)
The 6th Principle : Blessing(福,복)... Blessing... Article 232.
Gate 5 : Gwan(寬,관)... Generosity(Tolerance) ... Artiale 267.
Door 31 : Hongryang(弘量,홍량 - Broad-mindedness)...
Having a broad and magnanimous mind... Item 268.
Hongryang(弘量,홍량 - Broad-mindedness) is a grand principle for bestowing one′s true nature.
Even if strenght(Gang) exists within gentleness, one does not see that strenght,
and even if firmness exists within warmth, one does not perceive that firmness.
Measuring gentleness does not make it appear merely like gentleness,
and even when measuring warmth, it must not seem merely like warmth ― only then
will there be no limits or friction when encountering one another.
[Original Text,
Broad- mindedness(Hongryang) is the grand principle in the application and expression
of one′s inner nature.
Even though there is strenght(Gang) within gentleness,
that strenght is not outwardly seen ; and though there is fortitude(Ui) within harmony,
that fortitude is not outwardly exposed.
When measuring its gentleness, it does not seem merely gentle;
and when measuring its harmony, it does not seem merely harmonious,
thus leaving no boundaries, limits, or friction in its path.
[Explanation,
Muje-ae-gulgok(No boundaries, limits, or friction) well explains
the core spirit of the 366 Items(366-sa) of this scripture.
This scripture condenses the countless affairs encountered by human beings
into 366 fundamental items.
Furthermore, its purpose is to establish three directions to strive for and unite
those three into one.
Those three are Seongtong- gwangmyeong(realizing one′s nature to shine light),
Jaese-ihwa(governing the world according to reason / dharma),
and Hongik-ingan(broadly benefiting humanity); and the one that unites them
is llsin-gangchung(the Divine Spirit descending into the human heart).
Depicting this concept in a diagram results in the Samwon-ilsimdo( Diagram of Three
Circles and One Mind).
In this concept, all three are circles,
symbolizing Muje-ae-gulgok(having no boundaries, limits, or friction).
THis is because a circle has neither boundary limits nor friction
where parts encounter each other.
Angular and jagged things lack the broad-mindedness needed to encompass
the world and think grandly.
This text explains Muae(Unobstructedness / Unhinderedness),
which is the core concept of Huayan(Hwaeom) Buddhist philosophy.
Namely, these are the Contemplation of the Dharmadhatu of principle(l-beopgye-gwan),
the Contemplation of the Dharmadhatu of Unobstructedness between Principle and
Phenomena(lsa-muae-beopgye-gwan), and Contemplation of the Dharmadhatu of
Unobstructedness between Phenomenon and Phenomenon(Sasa-muae-beopgye-gwan).
