 5. Travel to Happiness : Barcelona (B) 


  Starting tomorrow, I'll rent a car and embark on a 45-day journey across the Iberian Peninsula and Provence, southwestern France.

  I've returned to Barcelona to finish the rest of my Barcelona sightseeing after Montserrat visiting  and mentally prepare for the long journey.
  The train from Montserrat arrived at Plaza de España at 3:30 PM. I immediately took subway line 5 to the Hospital de Sant Pau, a UNESCO World Heritage site. While preparing for this trip, I read the travel essay "Spain, You Are Free" by former KBS announcer Son Mi-na. Her love for Spain was evident in this book.
This book, written in part to reflect her experiences traveling to various parts of Spain during her year-long graduate studies at Barcelona University, left a deep impression on me. Reading it made me even more eager to visit Spain.
  Here's a quote from her book about the relationship between Sant Pau and the Sagrada Familia: "If you walk along the tree-lined street with your back to the cathedral, you'll come across the "Sant Pau" hospital, and the secret lies right there. You can't see the hospital from the cathedral, but when you arrive and turn around, the mysterious Sagrada Familia comes into view." When "Luis Domenec i Montaner" built this hospital in 1902, "Gaudi" advised that the hospital building be built at a 45-degree angle for the patients' comfort, so that the hospital would always have a view of the cathedral.

After touring the hospital, we decided to walk to the cathedral. Upon entering, a stone statue of the hospital's founder, Montaner, gazes upon the cathedral. His belief that "art has the power to heal" is reflected in the sculpture. The 5,000-square-meter complex consists of 48 well-constructed buildings.
The building, adorned with various stained glass, tiles, and sculptures, embodies Spain's unique "Mudejar" style, a blend of Islamic and Christian cultures. Gaudí's artistic spirit and Montaner's loving service warmed our hearts. UNESCO has designated it a World Heritage Site, offering a model for humanity.
Our group actually walked from the Hospital de Sant Pau to the cathedral. Barcelona's streets are laid out in a neat grid, but the road to the cathedral is diagonal. Gaudí and Montaner must have deeply impressed the patients, who, facing the cathedral, prayed to God for healing.

Thanks to this, we were able to see the Sagrada Familia once more. Despite the late hour, there were still plenty of tourists. Leaving here, we decided to visit Montjuïc Park, where our athlete, Hwang Young-jo, won the marathon. We took the funicular from the Parel subway station and got off at the park entrance. YS Jeong , who was looking at the map, said it wasn't far to the Catalan Museum of Art, where a musical fountain show takes place every weekend. We decided to walk while viewing the park and the Olympic Stadium. We saw a film
being filmed, passed Montjuïc Castle (closed for repairs), and even the Olympic Stadium, but no matter how far we walked, we couldn't reach the fountain show. So, we walked along the same road that Hwang Young-jo ran on.

  Our legs ached and we were all exhausted, but we found a bus stop. We asked some elderly Spanish people waiting there for directions to the Catalan Museum of Art, but since we couldn't understand each other, we used hand and foot gestures. They kindly guided us.

I safely boarded the bus and arrived at the fountain show. It was almost 9 p.m. Music began to play, and the fountains danced to the beat. The song was Smetana's "My Country." "My Country," a song about the sorrow of the Czech Republic, a lost nation, offered hope and vision to these people. The spray from the fountain was like the "majestic melody of the second movement  of the six movements of 'My Country', 'The Moldau', which depicts waves splashing and scattering spray on the banks of the Moldau, amid the echoes of flutes, country dances, and fairy music in the moonlight."

As the music and fountain show ended, so did our Barcelona adventure.

The four of us were so tired that we went back to the hotel to rest for the long journey ahead. (End of Barcelona)

  내일부터는 차를 Rent하여 45일 간의 이베리아 반도와 남서부 프랑스 프로방스를 달린다. 바르셀로나에 돌아와 나머지 관광을 끝내고 긴 여정을 위한 마음의 준비를 하여야 한다. 

  Montserrat에서 온 기차는 스페인 광장에 도착하였다. 오후 3시 반이다. 바로 지하철 5호선으로 유네스코 지정 문화유산인 산 파우 병원으로 갔다.  이 여행을 준비하는 동안 KBS 아나운서를 지낸 '손미나'가 쓴  기행 수필  "스페인 너는 자유다"를 읽은 적이 있다. 그녀의 스페인 사랑을 이 책에서 확인할 수 있었다.
1년 여 동안 바르셀로나 대학원에서 공부하면서 틈틈히 스페인 여러 지역을 다녀 본 느낌을 글로 쓴 것으로 나에게는 많은 감명을 주었다. 이 책을 읽으면서 스페인을 다녀 보고 싶은 마음이 더 간절해 지기도 했다. 


그녀의 책에서 산 파우와 사그라다 파밀리아 성당과의 관계에 대하여 소개한 것이 있어 인용하기로 한다.
' 성당을 등지고 가로수가 줄지어 있는 거리를 쭉 걸어가면 "산 파우"병원이 나오는데 비밀은 바로 그곳에 있었다. 성당에서는 병원이 보이지 않지만 병원 앞에 도착해 뒤를 돌아보면 사그라다 파밀리아의 신비한 모습이 한 눈에 들어 온다."루이스 도매네크 이 몬따네르"라는 사람이 1902년 이 병원을 지을 때 "가우디"는 환자의 정서를 생각하여 병원 건물을 45도로 틀어 짓도록 조언함에 따라 이 병원에서 언제나 성당을 바라 볼 수 있게 하였다.'


우리는 이 병원을 둘러 본 뒤 실제로 성당까지 걷기로 하였다. 이 병원에 들어서면 설립자 몬타네르의 석상이 성당을 바라 보고 있으며, '예술에는 사람을 치유하는 힘이 있다'라는 그의 신념을 조각에서 볼 수 있다. 5,000평방 미터에 48개의 건물이 잘 지어져 있다./ 각종 스테인드 글라스와 타일,조각등의 장식으로 꾸며 논 건물은 이슬람 문화와 기독교 문화를 혼합한 스페인 특유의 '무데하르' 양식이다. 가우디의 예술혼과  몬따네르의 사랑의 봉사가 우리 마음을 훈훈히 적셔 주었다. 그레서 유네스코는 세계문화유산으로 지정하여 인류에게 본을 보여 주고 있다./ 우리 일행은 실제로 산 파우 병원에서 성당까지 걸었다. 바르셀로나 거리는 반듯한 바둑판 모양이나 성당으로 가는길은 대각선 도로로서 병원의 환자들이 성당을 바라보며 하나님께 병의 치유를 간구하는 인간의 마음을 가우디와 몬따네르 두사람이 배려하여 환자에게 큰 감명을 주었으리라.


우리들은 덕분에 한 번 더 사그라다 파밀리아 성당을 볼 수 있었다. 늦은 시간이지만 여행객은 아직도 많았다. 이 곳을 떠나  우리의 황영조 선수가 마라톤에서 우승한 곳 '몬주익' 공원을 가 보기로 하였다. 지하철 '파렐 '역에서 '푸니쿨라'를 타고 공원 입구에서 내렸다. 지도를 보던 '정 공'은 주말마다 음악 분수 쇼가 열리는 '카탈루나 미술관' 앞 까지는 먼 거리가 아니라고 하여 이공원과 올림픽스타디움을 보면서 걷기로 하였다./ 영화 촬영하는 모습도 보고, 몬주익 성(수리로 Closed)을 거쳐 올림픽 체육관도 지나 쳤으나 분수쇼까지는 아무리 걸어도 나오지 않는다. 덕분에 황영조 선수가 뛴 도로를 쭈욱 걸어 갔다.
다리가 아프고 모두들 지친 상태에서 버스 정류장을 발견하였다. 그곳에서 버스를 기다리는 스페인 노인들에게 카탈루나 미술관 가는 버스를  가르켜 달라고 하였지만 말이 통하지 않아 손짓, 발짓으로 물어 보니 친절하게 안내를 해준다.


 무사히 버스를  타고 분수 쇼까지 왔다.거의 밤 9시가 되었다. 막 음악이 나오고  음악에 맞춰 분수가 춤을 춘다. 나오는 음악은 '스메타나'의 '나의 조국'이다. 나라 잃은 조국 체코의 한을 작곡한 나의 조국은 이들에게 희망과 비젼을 준 음악이다.  분수에서 뿜어 나오는 물보라는 마치  '몰다우 강변 기슭에서 불피리 소리와 시골 춤, 달빛 속의 요정의 음악이 메아리치는 가운데 파도가 물보라를 튕기며 흩어지는 모습을 묘사한 '나의 조국' 6곡 중 제 2곡 '몰다우 강'의 장엄한 선율'과 같았다.  


음악과 분수쇼가 끝나면서 우리들의 바르셀로나 여정도 같이 끝났다.


4사람이 너무 피곤하여 호텔로 들어 와 긴 여정을 위한 휴식에 들어 갔다.(바르셀로나 편 끝)
