Length - Tension Relation
Comparison of the Length-Tension Relation in Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle
Representative resting, total, and active forces as a function of length are plotted for a
skeletal muscle and a heart muscle preparation:
Fig. from Jewell, in "The Physiological Basis of Starling's Law of the Heart" CIBA Fdn
Symp. 24, 1974, as modified by Katz, in "Physiology of the Heart," Raven Press, 1992.
Active force
In both tissues, developed force rises to a peak at an "optimal length" and then falls off
at very long lengths. In both cases, the declining part of the developed force curve is
due to diminishing overlap between actin and myosin, resulting in formation of fewer
crossbridges at long lengths.
At lengths less than optimal, the force declines for a number of reasons, including
myosin collision with the z line. In addition, calcium release from the SR declines at
short lengths.
Resting force
In contrast to skeletal muscle, resting force is higher in cardiac muscle and is
significant at lengths less than optimal. Because of the relation between resting and
active force, the ventricles function on the rising limb of the length-tension relation
(whereas skeletal muscle normally operates near the optimal length). This ensures
that the intact heart can respond to an increase of filling by improving contraction.
