Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! When we listen to the Gospel, we frequently hear that Jesus performed signs, which are acts that reveal his special dedication to us and the salvation that he brings to the world. The Lord is presented as the One who gives meaning to our lives, freeing us from evil and sin.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 우리가 복음에서 예수님께서 표징을 행하신 것을 자주 듣습니다. 그 표징들은 예수님의 우리에 대한 특별한 헌신과 그분께서 세상에 가져오시는 구원을 드러냅니다. 주님께서는 우리 삶에 의미를 부여하시고 우리를 악과 죄에서 해방시키는 분이십니다.

By restoring sight to the blind and hearing to the deaf,s Christ is doing more than merely performing miraculous deeds; he is proclaiming to all that the Kingdom of God is near. In this way, today’s Gospel (Mt 14:13–21) bears witness that Jesus not only restores the senses of those who lack them, but that he also fills our senses with good things. To the deaf man, who regains his hearing, the Lord proclaims the Good News to be heard; to the blind man, who regains his sight, he shows the magnificent work of redemption being accomplished for him. Similarly, Jesus gives food to those who are hungry. The account of the multiplication of the loaves shows us that the encounter with the Lord is a nourishing experience. In the desert, that is, when we are in need, Christ is the bread of life. With him, our needs are abundantly met: “All ate and were filled,” and there were “twelve baskets full” left over (v. 20). This number highlights that the Lord’s gift is universal, and that his providential care for us never fails.

맹인에게 시력을, 귀머거리에게 청력을 되찾아 주심으로써 그리스도께서는 단순히 기적을 행하신 것 이상의 일을 하십니다. 그분께서는 모든 사람에게 하느님의 나라가 가까이 왔음을 선포하십니다. 이런 식으로 오늘 복음(마태복음 14:13-21)은 예수님께서 감각이 결핍된 사람들의 감각을 회복시켜 주실 뿐만 아니라 우리의 감각을 좋은 것으로 채워 주신다는 것을 알려줍니다. 주님께서 청력을 되 찾은 귀머거리에게 복음을 선포하시고, 시력을 되찾은 맹인에게는 그를 위해 이루어진 놀라운 구원의 기적을 보여주십니다. 마찬가지로 예수님께서는 배고픈 이들에게 음식을 주십니다. 오병이어의 기적 이야기는 우리에게 주님과의 만남이 영양분을 얻는 체험이라는 것을 보여줍니다. 광야에서, 즉 우리가 궁핍할 때, 그리스도께서는 생명의 빵이십니다. 그분과 함께 우리의 궁핍은 풍성하게 채워집니다. “모두 배불리 먹었으며”  “남은 조각을 모으니 열두 광주리에 가득 찼습니다.” (20절) 이 숫자는 주님의 선물이 보편적이며, 우리를 향한 그분의 섭리적인 돌보심은 결코 실패하지 않음을 강조합니다.

Dear friends, Christ truly satisfies humanity’s hunger, our hunger for truth and life. His gesture teaches us that nothing is discarded when it is shared. Hoarding and waste, on the contrary, are two sides of the same evil: greed. This spiritual sickness numbs the senses, which become intoxicated with wealth, to the point of making people forget those who weep from hunger and cry out from thirst. And so, in the face of an opulence that reeks of decay, we find the outstretched hands of those who have no nourishment, the burned homes of those who have no peace.

사랑하는 친구 여러분, 그리스도는 진정으로 인류의 배고픔, 즉 진리와 생명에 대한 우리의 갈망을 채워주십니다. 그리스도께서는 나눌 때 아무것도 버려지지 않는다는 것을 행동으로 우리에게 가르치십니다. 축적과 낭비는 반대로 탐욕이라는 동일한 악의 양면입니다. 이 영적인 병폐는 감각을 마비시켜 굶주림에 울부짖고 목마름에 절규하는 사람들을 잊을 정도로 사람들을 부에 도취하게 만듭니다. 그리하여 부패의 악취가 나는 풍요 앞에, 우리는 굶주린 이들이 내미는 손, 평화를 빼앗긴 이들의 불타버린 가정을 발견합니다.

Faced with the deserts of war and arrogance, let us consider with what kindness the Lord “looked up to heaven, and blessed,” “broke the loaves, and gave them” to his disciples, so that they might distribute them to the crowd (cf. v. 19). In this miracle of charity, we recognize the characteristic actions of Jesus, which find their culmination in the Last Supper, for it was then that the Son of God gave us his very life as our brother in humanity. As we savor the grace of the Eucharist, let us commit ourselves to bearing witness to its beauty in our daily actions, beginning with blessing meals at the table with family and friends. In Jesus’ company, even vacations can become a time of fraternal serenity, if we reach out to our neighbors in need.

전쟁과 교만의 광야에 직면하여, 주님께서 어떠한 마음으로 “하늘을 우러러 찬미를 드리시고” “빵을 떼어 제자들에게 주시어” 제자들이 그것을 군중에게 나누어 주게 하셨는지 생각해 봅시다. (19절 참조) 이 사랑의 기적에서 우리는 예수님의 특징적인 행동들을 알게 되는데 이는 최후의 만찬에서 절정에 이릅니다. 바로 그때 하느님의 아드님께서 인간으로서 우리의 형제로서 당신의 생명을 우리에게 주셨기 때문입니다. 성체성사의 은총을 음미하며, 일상생활에서 그 아름다움을 증거 하는데 헌신합시다. 가족과 친구들과 식탁에서 식전 기도로 음식을 축복하는 것을 시작으로 일상생활에서 증거 할 수 있습니다. 예수님과 함께라면, 휴가조차도 우리가 어려움에 처한 이웃에게 손을 뻗치면 형제애를 느끼는 평온한 시간이 될 수 있습니다.

Let us therefore ask the Virgin Mary, our loving Mother, to help us grow in charity, so that no one may lack their daily bread.

동정 성모 마리아님, 우리의 사랑하는 어머니, 저희를 도우셔서 저희의 사랑이 커져서 아무도 일용할 양식이 부족하지 않게 하여 주소서!

Dear brothers and sisters, I am following with concern the alarming situation in Ceuta, praying to God that, through the intercession of Our Lady of Africa, solutions may be found to bring peace, stability and justice.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 세우타의 심각한 상황을 우려하며 지켜보고 있습니다. 우리의 아프리카의 성모님의 전구를 통해 평화와 안정, 그리고 정의가 실현될 수 있도록 하느님께 기도합니다.

Let us continue to pray for peace, that wars may cease throughout the world and diplomatic solutions to conflicts may be found.  Let us remember all the victims of hostilities, especially the weakest and most defenseless: children, the elderly and the sick.  May the Lord comfort those who suffer and bless the work of those who bring aid and consolation.

평화를 위해 계속 기도합시다. 전 세계에서 전쟁이 멈추고 분쟁이 외교적으로 해결되도록 기도합니다. 모든 전쟁 희생자들, 특히 가장 약하고 무방비한 이들, 어린이, 노인, 병자들을 기억합시다. 주님께서 고통 받는 이들을 위로하시고, 도움과 위로를 전하는 이들의 수고를 축복하여 주소서!

In these days the “Pardon of Assisi” is celebrated.  Saint Francis obtained this Indulgence from Pope Honorius III in 1216, having been inspired — while praying at the Porziuncola — by a vision of Jesus and Mary surrounded by angels.  Let us thank the Lord for this great gift and treasure it, especially in this eighth centenary year of the Transitus of the Poor Man of Assisi, who died at the Porziuncola on 3 October 1226.

요즘 “아시시의 전대사”를 기념합니다. 성 프란치스코는 1216년 포르치운콜라에서 기도하던 중 천사들에게 둘러싸인 예수님과 마리아님의 환상을 보고, 교황 호노리우스 3세로부터 이 전대사를 받았습니다. 특히 1226년 10월 3일 포르치운쿨라에서 세상을 떠난 아시시의 가난한 이, 성 프란치스코, 의 서거 800주년을 맞아, 이 위대한 선물을 주신 주님께 감사드리고, 그 선물을 소중히 생각합시다.

I greet all of you, Romans and pilgrims from various countries: in particular, the “Giovanissimi” from the parishes of Saccolongo and Creola (Padua), the young people from the parish of Saint John Bosco in Altamura, and the youth from the Pastoral Collaboration of Castelfranco Veneto, accompanied by their priests and leaders. I wish everyone a happy Sunday!
