Summary:
Paul rebukes believers for taking disputes before secular courts instead of resolving them within the church. He reminds them that the saints will judge the world and even angels, so they should be capable of handling ordinary matters. By bringing lawsuits against one another before unbelievers, they bring shame on the church. Paul stresses that it would be better to suffer wrong or be defrauded than to wrong fellow believers through lawsuits.
Teaching:
In today’s passage, “judge” means deciding right and wrong in a courtroom. Believers must discern that the world is unrighteous, and within the church they must also judge whether something is according to God’s will or not.
Problems within the church must be resolved within the church. If the church cannot solve its own problems, how can it be the light and salt of the world? Judgment must be made by the scale of the Lord’s Word.
We must become the Lord’s servants who carry out His justice and righteousness in the Lord.
