Summary:
Paul rebukes the believers for wronging and cheating one another instead of living righteously. He reminds them that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God—listing sins such as immorality, idolatry, adultery, theft, greed, drunkenness, and slander. Yet he declares that some of them were like that, but now they have been washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of God.
Teaching:
Paul points out that while people are decaying inwardly, they pretend to be faithful outwardly. Within that pretense lie immorality, idolatry, adultery, theft, greed, drunkenness, and slander.
The Corinthian church may appear to be thriving on the outside, but inwardly it is rotting. Repentance is a lifelong act—if one commits again the sin already repented of, one must repent again.
Repentance must take place in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of God, for our forgiveness and salvation are accomplished only through His name and His Spirit.
The church was established in the name of Jesus and in the Holy Spirit, and as the holy people of God, we must daily receive cleansing, sanctification, and justification in the name of Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of God.
