NASA to announce 'alien' bacteria that survives in arsenic
(http://www.koreaherald.com/national/Detail.jsp?newsMLId=20101202000908 )
NASA scientists will announce that they discovered microbes in a deadly poisonous arsenic lake, according to The Sun.
NASA plans to hold a news conference in Washington early Friday morning (in Korean time) to announce an astrobiology finding.
But the British daily reported that the researchers -- amazed that anything could thrive in the toxic liquid, -- will unveil their dramatic conclusions.
The report said the discovery will boost hope of finding extraterrestrial life on other worlds.
“They say the microbes prove a second form of life started on Earth in environments previously thought too hostile,” the report said.
With NASA
set to hold a press conference on Thursday, speculation has mounted as to
whether the U.S. space agency will confirm the existence of life outside of the
earth.
The media advisory issued on Nov. 29 is highly
suggestive: “NASA will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. PST on Thursday, Dec.
2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence
of extraterrestrial life.”
The astrobiology finding purportedly linked to the
evidence of extraterrestrial life has fueled wild speculation in the
blogosphere and tabloid news outlets around the world.
Although NASA is unlikely to produce compelling
and direct evidence of extraterrestrial life in the forthcoming press
conference, some expect the space agency to present something new in the field
of astrobiology, particularly in connection with Mars.
[Summary]
NASA scientists announced that they discovered microbes in a deadly poisonous arsenic lake, according to The Sun. The astrobiology finding purportedly linked to the evidence of extraterrestrial life has fueled wild speculation in the blogosphere and tabloid news outlets around the world.
[Question]
1. Do you think this announcement of NASA is meaningful? For me, it was very disappointed. Because many people were expecting clear evidence of aliens or decoding signals from outer space. How do you feel about their announcement?
2. Key message of the announcement is very simple. In the deep inside the space, there could be an alien beyond our knowledge. For example, Opimus Prime from Movie Transformer coud be possible. What kinds of aliens could you imagine? Or some people though aliens are already exist near us, but we could not recognize them due to our point of view. What do you think about this opinion?
3. Before this announcement, there were tons of rumor about this. For instance “Movie deep impact or 2012 comes true” or “Scientist found God”. What kind of fact do you expect from NASA.
Afterlife
The afterlife (also referred to as life after death, the Hereafter, the Next World or the Other Side) is the idea that consciousness or mind continues after the death of the body occurs, by natural or supernatural means. In many popular views, this continued existence often takes place in an immaterial or spiritual realm. Major views on the afterlife derive from religion, esotericism and metaphysics.
Dead people are usually believed to go to a specific plane of existence after death (other than eternal oblivion), typically believed to be determined by a god, based on their actions during physical life. In contrast, the term afterlife refers to another life in which only the "essence" of the being is preserved, and "reincarnation" is another life on Earth or possibly within the same universe.
There are two different types of views on the afterlife.
The first type is loosely based on observations and conjecture made by humans or instruments (for example a radio or a voice recorder, which are used in electronic voice phenomena, or EVP). These observations come from reincarnation research, near death experiences, out-of-body experiences, astral projection, EVP, mediumship, various forms of photography and so forth. Academic inquiry into such phenomena can be broken down roughly into two categories: psychical research generally focuses on case studies, interviews, and field reports, while parapsychology relates to strictly laboratory research.
The second type is based on a form of faith, usually faith in the stories that are told by ancestors or faith in religious books like the Bible, the Qur'an, the Talmud, the Vedas, the Tripitaka etc. This article is mainly about this second type.
[Question]
1. Do you believe life after death? Or have you ever experienced..? Apart from religious stereotypes let’s talk about it. You can describe the heaven you want to go or apposite.
2. Do you think evidence about life after death is true or false? So far, there is no scientific evidence but enough eyewitness evidence. Which opinion do you think is true?
3. Most of the story about life after death is based on each culture. Among the stories, could you describe one or choose your favorite?
4. What if there is nothing after death. All you have to do is just doing nothing but watching other living people. (This is one of the hell I can imagine) What are you going to do?
S. Korean artillery mistakenly fired on DMZ
South Korea mistakenly fired an artillery
shell toward the southern side of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on Sunday
afternoon and soon sent a message to North Korea that the firing was
accidental, military officials said. No casualties occurred from the accidental
discharge that took place at around 3 p.m., the officials said. An army
artillery unit in the border town of Paju, Gyeonggi Province, mistakenly fired
a 155mm towed howitzer while on training, they said. The shell landed some 14
kilometers north of the army base, on a hill on the South Korean side of the
DMZ, they said.
"The army unit was not engaging
in an artillery firing exercise. A shell that had been loaded previously was
mistakenly fired," an army official said.
The military authorities sent a
message to North Korea explaining that the firing was unintentional. North
Korea has given no response, they said. Military authorities were investigating
the incident, the officials said. Tensions are running high between the two
Koreas after the North launched an artillery attack on a South Korean border
island Tuesday, killing two marines and two civilians. The attack marked the
first time since the 1950-53 Korean War that the communist neighbor targeted a
civilian area. (Yonhap News)
[3on 3 Debate]
Around week ago, N. Korea attacks S. Korea’s territory. During this battle there were pros and cons between people about politic action of S. Korea against N. Korea. Which side will you take and why? Do you think actions were appropriate or it must be more progressive?
