POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, St Peter's Square, Sunday, 9 August 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Today’s Gospel speaks of Jesus approaching his disciples by walking on the waters of the Sea of Galilee in the midst of a storm (cf. Mt 14:22-33).

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 오늘 복음은 예수님께서 폭풍 가운데 갈릴래아호수 위를 걸으시어 제자들에게 가시는 이야기를 전합니다. (마태복음 14:22-33 참조)

Following the miracle of the loaves and fish (cf. Mt 14:13-21), the Master urges his disciples to get into the boat and set out, while he withdraws to the mountain to pray by himself. Once away from the shore, the disciples find themselves at the mercy of the wind and struggle to make headway. After a successful experience in which they had been the protagonists of a miraculous sign, they now find themselves helpless and frightened in the face of the threat of the waves and the headwind.

빵과 물고기의 기적 (마태복음 14:13-21 참조) 이후, 예수님께서는 제자들을 재촉하시어 배를 타고 건너편으로 가게하시고, 따로 기도하시려고 산에 오르십니다. 호숫가에서 멀어지자 마침 맞바람이 불어 제자들은 파도에 시달리고 있습니다. 기적적인 표징의 주인공이 된 성공적인 체험 후에 제자들은 이제 파도와 맞바람의 위협 앞에서 무력감과 두려움에 휩싸여 있습니다.

As the night was drawing to a close, Jesus came towards them across the choppy waters, and, terrified, they mistook him for a ghost (v. 26). But he said to them, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid!” (v. 27). The Lord’s presence changes everything: Peter even manages to take a few steps across the waves towards him; but then losing his nerve, he begins to sink, and Jesus saves him. When the Master then steps into the boat, the storm subsides, and a profession of faith spontaneously springs out of the disciples’ hearts: “Truly, you are the Son of God!” (v. 33).

밤이 저물어 어두워질 무렵, 예수님께서 파도치는 호수를 걸어서 건너 오셨고, 제자들은 겁에 질려 예수님을 유령으로 착각했습니다. (26절) 예수님께서 곧 그들에게 말씀하셨습니다. “용기를 내어라. 나다. 두려워하지 마라.” (27절) 주님의 현존은 모든 것을 변화시킵니다. 심지어 베드로는 파도를 건너 예수님께 몇 걸음을 떼기까지 하지만 겁에 질려 물에 빠지기 시작하고, 예수님께서 그를 구하십니다. 예수님께서 배에 오르시자 폭풍이 잠잠해집니다. 그러자 제자들의 마음으로부터 저절로 믿음의 고백이 터져 나옵니다. “스승님은 참으로 하느님의 아드님이십니다.” (33절)

To realize this point, it was not enough for them simply to have witnessed a miracle, nor to have succeeded in the eyes of the people; instead, they had to experience their own weakness and, within it, recognize God’s presence. Only this experience could open their eyes and hearts to his closeness, finding peace even in the midst of the storm.

이 점을 깨닫기 위해서는 단순히 기적을 목격했거나, 사람들의 눈에 보이는 성공을 한 것만으로 충분하지 않았습니다. 대신에 그들은 자신들의 연약함을 체험해야 했고, 그 안에서 하느님의 현존을 알아봐야 했습니다. 오직 이러한 체험만이 그들의 눈과 마음을 열어 하느님께서 가까이 계시다는 것을 깨달을 수 있게 하고, 폭풍 속에서도 평화를 찾을 수 있게 했습니다.

Sometime later, Jesus would say to them: “If you have faith and do not doubt… if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done” (Mt 21:21). This is similar to what they experienced on the lake: the peace of Christ, who had been on the mountain praying, reached them in the midst of the raging waters.

얼마 후 예수님께서 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “너희가 믿음을 가지고 의심하지 않으면, 이 산더러 ‘들려서 저 바다에 빠져라.’ 하여도 그대로 이루어질 것이다.” (마태복음 21:21) 이것은 그들이 호수에서 체험한 것과 유사합니다. 산에서 기도하시던 그리스도의 평화가 거센 물살 한가운데 있는 그들에게 옮겨졌습니다.

This miracle, then, teaches us something important. First, not to get carried away by success and never to be presumptuous. At the same time, not to despair, even in moments of darkness, when we feel powerless in the face of problems and, despite our efforts, it seems as though we are going backwards rather than forwards. Whatever the circumstances, Jesus does not abandon us, and if we humbly welcome him into the boat of our lives — through prayer, the sacraments and listening to his Word — in him, we will find peace, light and strength for our journey.

이 기적은 이제 우리에게 중요한 가르침을 줍니다. 우선, 성공에 도취되지 말고, 결코 주제넘은 생각을 하면 안 됩니다. 동시에 어둠의 시간에도, 문제에 직면하여 우리가 무력감을 느낄 때, 아무리 노력해도 앞으로 나아가기보다는 오히려 뒤로 물러서는 것처럼 느껴지는 순간에도 절망하지 말아야 합니다. 어떤 상황이든 예수님께서는 우리를 버리지 않으십니다. 우리가 겸손한 마음으로 그분을 우리 삶의 배에 오르시도록 환영하면 - 기도, 성사, 그리고 그분 말씀의 경청을 통하여 - 우리는 그분 안에서 우리의 여정을 위한 평화, 빛, 그리고 힘을 발견할 것입니다.

May Mary, who was proclaimed blessed for her faith (cf. Lk 1:45), help us to live in a trusting surrender to God.

당신의 믿음 때문에 복되시다 칭송받으신 (루카 1,45 참조) 동정 성모 마리아님, 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 믿음으로 하느님께 온전히 의탁하는 삶을 살게 하소서!

After the Angelus

Dear brothers and sisters, I continue to follow with concern the tragic situation in Sudan, especially in the city of el-Obeid. In expressing my spiritual closeness to all the people of the nation, I renew my appeal to those in authority to guarantee humanitarian corridors for the civilian population. At the same time, I urge the international community to support efforts aimed at bringing about an immediate ceasefire. Let us pray that the Lord may sustain those who are suffering, convert the hearts of those who sow violence, and grant the long awaited peace.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 수단, 특히 엘오베이드 시에서 벌어지고 있는 비극적인 상황을 깊은 우려 속에 지켜보고 있습니다. 수단 국민 모두에게 영적인 위로를 전하며, 당국에 민간인들을 위한 인도주의적 통로를 확보해 줄 것을 다시 한 번 간곡히 호소합니다. 동시에 국제 사회가 즉각적인 휴전을 위한 노력을 지원해 줄 것을 촉구합니다. 주님께서 고통 받는 이들을 붙들어 주시고, 폭력을 일삼는 자들의 마음을 돌이키게 하시며, 오랫동안 기다려온 평화를 허락해 주시기를 기도합시다.

Distressing reports continue to arrive of innocent people being killed and injured in Ukraine and Russia. These incidents are occurring one after another, indeed they are multiplying, resulting in ever-increasing numbers of civilian victims, including children. My thoughts are with the victims’ families, the wounded and all those who are suffering due to the ongoing conflict. In the face of so much anguish, I renew my heartfelt appeal for humanitarian law to be respected and for both sides to cease attacks on civilian targets. War only begets more war and causes immense suffering. It is time to put an end to this vicious cycle of violence and make room for diplomacy and dialogue, so as to open the way to peace.

우크라이나와 러시아에서 무고한 사람들이 죽거나 다쳤다는 참혹한 보고가 계속해서 들어오고 있습니다. 이러한 사건들은 끊임없이 발생하고 있으며, 실제로 그 수가 급증하여 어린이들을 포함한 민간인 희생자 수가 계속해서 늘어나고 있습니다. 희생자 가족들과 부상자들, 그리고 이 분쟁으로 고통 받는 모든 분들께 위로의 마음을 전합니다. 이처럼 큰 고통 속에서 저는 인도주의법이 존중되고 양측 모두 민간인 목표물에 대한 공격을 중단할 것을 간절히 호소합니다. 전쟁은 더 많은 전쟁을 낳을 뿐이며 엄청난 고통을 초래합니다. 이제 이 폭력의 악순환을  끝내고 외교와 대화를 통해 평화로 가는 길을 열어야 할 때입니다.

이제 저는 로마 시민 여러분과 여러 나라에서 오신 순례자 여러분 모두를 진심으로 환영합니다!

I greet in a special way the young people from the Saint Mary Magdalene Community of the Archdiocese of Milan, who have walked the Via Francigena from Siena to Rome; as well as the Scouts from Enna, who have held their camp in the Roman Hills; and the young people from Pernumia, in the Diocese of Padua.

시에나에서 로마까지 비아 프란치제나를 걸었던 밀라노 대교구 성 마리아 막달레나 공동체의 젊은이들과, 로마 언덕에서 캠프를 열었던 엔나의 스카우트 대원들, 그리고 파도바 교구 페르누미아의 젊은이들에게 특별한 인사를 전합니다.

The presence of so many youth groups, who chose to devote part of their summer vacation on formation activities and friendship, is a sign of hope, as was the gathering of the young Franciscans whom I had the joy of meeting last Thursday in Assisi.

여름 방학의 일부를 양성 활동과 친목 도모에 할애하기로 선택한 수많은 청년 단체들 그리고 지난 목요일 아시시에서 반갑게 만났던 젊은 프란치스칸들의 현존은 희망의 징표입니다.

To all of you, young men and women who are listening to me, I would like to remind you that in these days the liturgical calendar offers us some wonderful examples of holy men and women, whom I invite you to get to know them better. Yesterday was the great Saint Dominic, founder of the Order of Preachers; today, Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Edith Stein, the Carmelite who was killed at Auschwitz and is Co-Patroness of Europe; tomorrow, Saint Lawrence, deacon of the Church of Rome; and the day after tomorrow, Saint Clare of Assisi, who left a life of comfort to follow Jesus, poor and humble, in the footsteps of her fellow citizen, Saint Francis. Dear young people, allow yourselves to be inspired by these exemplary witnesses to the Gospel!

제 말을 듣고 있는 젊은 남녀 여러분, 저는 여러분이 이 전례시기의 훌륭한 성인들의 모범을 더 잘 알게 되기를 바랍니다. 어제는 도미니코회 창립자인 위대한 성 도미니코였고, 오늘은 아우슈비츠에서 순교하고 유럽의 공동 수호성인인 십자가의 성 데레사 베네딕타, 에디트 슈타인 카르멜회 수녀였습니다. 내일은 로마 가톨릭 교회의 부제였던 성 라우렌시오, 그리고 모레는 동료 시민인 성 프란치스코의 발자취를 따라 편안한 삶을 버리고 가난하고 겸손하게 예수님을 따랐던 아시시의 성 클라라입니다. 사랑하는 젊은이 여러분, 이 모법적인 복음의 증거자들의 삶에서 영감을 받기를 바랍니다.
