Summary & Teaching
Paul advises the unmarried and widows that, because of the present distress, it is good to remain as they are. Those who marry do not sin, but marriage brings earthly troubles and distractions. Time is short, so believers should live with detachment from worldly concerns, focusing on pleasing the Lord rather than being anxious about worldly matters. The unmarried can devote themselves fully to God, while the married are divided in attention between the Lord and their spouse. Paul says this not to restrict them but to help them serve the Lord in undivided devotion.
“Those who have wives should be as though they had none; and those who weep, as though they did not weep; and those who rejoice, as though they did not rejoice; and those who buy, as though they did not possess; and those who use the world, as though they did not make full use of it; for the present form of this world is passing away.”
Therefore, those who are married should not forget their faith, and those who are unmarried—both young men and women—should make sure that their marriage becomes one that leads to salvation. Let your marriage be one that does not cause you to lose your salvation.
