Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! Yesterday we contemplated the Virgin Mary in her unbreakable bond with her Son. Not even death could sever that union of persons in soul and body, which is eternal life. Every Sunday reminds us that the same fulfillment is reserved for those who follow Jesus. His resurrection is not a past event, but new life that draws us in.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 어제 우리는 성모 마리아와 당신의 아들과의  끊을 수 없는 결속에 대해 묵상했습니다. 죽음조차도 영혼과 육신의 결속, 즉 영원한 생명인 두 분의 그 결속을 끊을 수 없었습니다. 매주 주일 우리는 동일한 결속의 실현이 예수님을 따르는 사람들에게 준비되어 있다는 것을 깨닫습니다. 예수님의 부활은 과거의 사건이 아니라 우리를 끌어들이는 새로운 생명입니다.

This is demonstrated today by the Canaanite woman, who is the protagonist of the Gospel proclaimed at Mass (cf. Mt 15:21-28). Although she did not belong to his people and lived in a foreign land, she persistently sought to speak with Jesus, following him like a disciple who already had a bond with him. They had probably never met before, yet in a mysterious way, faith had already taken root in her. She does not desire anything for herself, but rather peace for her tormented daughter. She places her trust in Jesus, in whom she recognizes the Messiah, a descendant of David (cf. v. 22).

오늘 미사에서 선포되는 복음의 주인공인 가나안 여인을 통해 이러한 사실이 드러납니다. (마태복음 15,21-28 참조) 그녀는 예수님의 백성이 아니었고 타지에서 살았지만, 마치 예수님과 이미 유대감을 가진 제자처럼 끈질기게 예수님과 대화하려고 했습니다. 예수님을 뵌 적이 없었을 텐데 신비롭게도 그녀의 마음속에는 이미 믿음이 뿌리내려 있었습니다. 그녀는 자신을 위해서는 아무것도 바라지 않고, 오직 고통 받는 딸에게 평화를 주시기를 갈망합니다. 그녀는 예수님께서 다윗의 후손이시고 메시아이심을 알아보고 예수님을 온 마음으로 믿습니다. (22절 참조)

The Evangelist does not hide the obstacles faced by this woman. The disciples see her as a nuisance, and Jesus himself resists her pleas. The Master had actually withdrawn to that region (cf. v. 21), and we can imagine that, as on other occasions, he was seeking a secluded place to pray and instruct his disciples. At that moment, however, something unexpected happens. Reflecting upon this, we can understand Jesus’ obedience in fulfilling his mission by allowing himself to be moved by what he sees and hears. Finally, he says to her: “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish” (v. 28).

복음사가는 이 여인이 봉착한 장애물들을 숨기지 않습니다. 제자들은 그녀를 귀찮은 존재로 여기고, 예수님께서도 그녀의 간청을 거절하십니다. 사실 예수님은 그곳으로 물러나셨고, (21절 참조), 우리는 다른 경우에서 보았듯이 예수님께서 기도하시고 제자들을 가르치시기 위해 한적한 곳을 찾고 계셨을 것으로 짐작할 수 있습니다. 그러나 바로 그때 예상치 못한 일이 일어납니다. 이를 생각하며 우리는 예수님의 순종을 이해할 수 있습니다. 예수님께서는 보시고 들으시는 것에 감동받도록 맡기시어 자신에게 주어진 사명을 수행하십니다. 마침내 예수님께서 그녀에게 말씀하십니다. “아, 여인아! 네 믿음이 참으로 크구나. 네가 바라는 대로 될 것이다.” (28절)

Even today, the Church can be surprised by God’s work and spread the peace of Christ beyond boundaries already drawn. Her mission is anticipated by divine grace, which works in the depths of our consciences, so that in every encounter — even those that disrupt our plans — we are to listen attentively by opening our eyes and hearts to what God wants to tell us.

오늘날에도 교회는 하느님의 놀라운 섭리에 경탄하고, 이미 정해진 경계를 넘어 그리스도의 평화를 전파할 수 있습니다. 교회의 사명은 우리 양심 깊은 곳에서 작용하는 하느님의 은총에 의해 예견됩니다. 그리하여 우리는 모든 만남 - 심지어 우리의 계획을 방해하는 만남들 - 속에서 우리의 눈과 마음을 열어 하느님께서 우리에게 전하고자 하시는 말씀을 주의 깊게 들어야 합니다.

From the Canaanite woman we learn humility and determination. Thanks to her faith, we learn that God’s table is set for everyone and that no one is left merely with crumbs (cf. vv. 26-27), because each person has his or her own place with the Father. In the light of this faith, inequalities, discrimination and barriers that trample on the dignity of too many of God’s sons and daughters become unbearable.

가나안 여인을 통해 우리는 겸손과 결단력을 배웁니다. 그녀의 믿음 덕분에 우리는 하느님의 식탁은 모든 사람을 위해 차려져 있으며, 누구도 단지 빵부스러기와 함께 남겨지면 안 된다는 것을 배웁니다. (26-27절 참조) 각 사람은 아버지와 함께 있을 자신의 자리를 가지고 있기 때문입니다. 이러한 믿음에 비추어, 너무나 많은 하느님의 아들딸들의 존엄성을 짓밟는 불평등, 차별, 그리고 장벽들은 참을 수 없게 됩니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, we are the Church of Jesus Christ in a troubled world; a world that seeks peace. Let us ask Mary, our Mother, to intercede for us “because on her lips is proclaimed ‘the strongest and most innovative hymn ever articulated, the Magnificat’” (Magnifica Humanitas, 244). It is the song of one who now sees reality through God’s eyes and, for this reason, does not lose hope and acts in charity.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 우리는 혼란스러운 세상, 평화를 추구하는 세상에 있는 예수 그리스도의 교회입니다. 우리의 어머니, 성모 마리아께 우리를 위해 전구 해주십사고 청합시다. “성모님의 입에서는 '지금까지 표현된 가장 강력하고 혁신적인 찬미가, 마니피캇'이 선포되었기 때문입니다." (Magnifica Humanitas, 244) 마니피캇은 지금 하느님의 눈으로 세상을 바라보고, 그렇기에 희망을 잃지 않고 사랑의 마음으로 행동하는 분의 노래입니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, I renew my appeal for an end to the ongoing violence against the Palestinian civilian population in the West Bank, and I urgently call on the international community to work toward advancing the two-state solution, for a just and lasting peace.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 서안 지구에서 팔레스타인 민간인들을 대상으로 자행되고 있는 폭력 행위를 종식할 것을 다시 한 번 호소하며, 국제 사회가 정의롭고 지속적인 평화를 위한 두 국가 해법을 진전시키기 위해 노력할 것을 긴급히 촉구합니다.

The Mediterranean Games will begin this week in Taranto. They will include various countries from Africa, Asia and Europe that are part of the Mediterranean region. I hope this sporting event will be a sign of peace and friendship among the peoples of this region and the entire world.

이번 주 타란토에서 지중해 게임이 개막됩니다. 아프리카, 아시아, 유럽 등 지중해 지역에 속한 여러 국가들이 참가할 예정입니다. 이 스포츠 행사가 이 지역뿐만 아니라 전 세계 사람들 사이에 평화와 우정의 상징이 되기를 바랍니다.

And now I welcome all of you who have gathered here at Castel Gandolfo for the Sunday Angelus. I warmly welcome pilgrims from various countries. In greeting the Polish pilgrims, I extend my blessing to the many women participating in the traditional pilgrimage to the Shrine of Piekary Śląskie, in Upper Silesia. I wish everyone a happy Sunday.
