Summary:
Paul reminds the Corinthians of Israel’s history as a warning. All the Israelites experienced God’s deliverance through the cloud, the sea, and spiritual food and drink from Christ, yet most were destroyed in the wilderness because of disobedience. Their idolatry, immorality, testing of God, and grumbling brought judgment. These events were recorded as examples and warnings for believers not to desire evil things as they did.
Teaching:
If you don’t read the Bible, you end up living as if you have faith and go to church based on your own thoughts. But that is led by the self, not by true faith. Living by true faith means knowing the Word of God and being guided by the Holy Spirit.
Evil always takes a form that God hates - it opposes Him and threatens our salvation. People do not obey or trust what God says; instead, whenever something happens, they doubt God and complain against His servants.
In today’s passage, the warning “do not be like them” appears four times. Many were punished when they came out of Egypt and journeyed through the wilderness toward Canaan. Likewise, some today, though they have come out of “Egypt” and are on their way to heaven, stumble along the way. We must not forget that if we fall, we too will perish as they did. Let us understand this and live by the kind of faith that pleases God.
