Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! This Sunday’s Gospel (Mt 16:13-20) confronts us with a question that speaks to each of us on our journey of faith: Who is Jesus, truly, for me?

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 행복한 주일입니다! 이번 주일 복음(마태복음 16:13-20)은 신앙 여정에 있는 우리 한 사람 한 사람에게 다음의 질문을 합니다. 나에게 예수님께서는 진정 누구이신가?

The Gospel passage makes us understand how decisive this question is for the experience of discipleship. Indeed, although the twelve apostles had already shared so much of the life and ministry of their teacher, Jesus did not take for granted that they truly knew him or had understood the mystery of the Kingdom of God.  Thus, after asking them what people were saying about him, he addressed them directly: “But who do you say that I am?” (Mt 16:15).

복음서 본문은 우리에게 이 질문이 제자로서의 체험을 묻는 얼마나 결정적인 질문인지 깨닫게 합니다. 진정 열두 사도는 이미 그들 스승의 삶과 사목 활동을 많이 공유했지만 예수님께서는 그들이 진정으로 자신을 알고 하느님 나라의 신비를 이해했다고 당연하게 여기지 않으셨습니다. 그래서 그들에게 사람들이 자신에 대해 어떻게 말하는지 물으신 다음, 그들에게 직접 이렇게 물으셨습니다. “그러면 너희는 나를 누구라고 하느냐?” (마태복음 16,15)

Brothers and sisters, this is a fundamental question for the disciples of every age, and for each one of us.  Faith is not something given to us once and for all.  Rather, we continually need to rediscover the face of Christ and his Gospel, to enter more deeply into his message and to renew the choices we make in our lives, so that they may be consistent with what we profess. In this way, we can overcome the temptation to think that we already know everything and to reduce faith to mere habit.

형제자매 여러분, 이것은 모든 시대의 제자들, 그리고 우리 각자에게 근본적인 질문입니다. 믿음은 우리에게 한 번에 완전히 주어지는 그런 것이 아닙니다. 오히려 우리는 끊임없이 그리스도와 그분의 복음을 재발견하고 그분의 메시지에 더욱 깊이 들어가고, 우리의 삶에서 새로운 선택을 하여 그 선택들이 우리가 고백하는 것과 일치하도록 해야 합니다. 이렇게 함으로써 우리는 우리가 모든 것을 이미 알고 있다고 생각하는 유혹, 그리고 믿음을 단지 습관으로 축소시키는 유혹을 극복할 수 있습니다.

The question that is put to us each day — who is Jesus for me, and what does his presence mean in my life? — emerges especially in prayer and when we meditate on the Gospel.  Yet it also arises when we encounter the wounds and needs of our brothers and sisters, and in those relationships and situations that most deeply challenge our conscience.  In our daily lives, in short, we can discover whether the Lord Jesus is for us merely a great figure of history, who said and did important things, or the Christ of God, the One sent to bring us into the love of the Father and to transform our lives and the world in which we live.

매일 우리에게 던져지는 질문 - 나에게 예수님은 누구이시며, 그분의 현존이 내 삶에서 무슨 의미를 지니는가? - 은 특히 기도할 때 그리고 우리가 복음을 묵상할 때 드러납니다. 하지만 이 질문은 또한 형제자매들의 상처와 필요를 마주할 때, 그리고 우리의 양심에 가장 깊은 도전을 주는 관계와 상황 속에서 나타납니다. 간단히 말해서, 우리는 일상생활 속에서 주 예수님께서 우리에게 단지 역사적으로 중요한 말씀과 행적을 남긴 위대한 인물이신지, 아니면 우리를 아버지의 사랑 안으로 인도하시고, 우리의 삶과 우리가 사는 세상을 변화시키기 위해 보내지신 분, 하느님의 그리스도이신지 발견할 수 있습니다.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us seek not to retreat into our own convictions and religious certainties, but to remain open to an authentic relationship with Christ.  At times, when it comes to the Christian faith, we may be content with what we have merely “heard,” with common assumptions or with what has been handed down to us, perhaps even with the best of intentions.  Yet Jesus calls us to give a personal response, to know him more closely and to allow ourselves to be shaped by friendship with him through an ever new encounter.  This may also ask us to follow unfamiliar paths and to make choices different from those we had imagined.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 우리 자신의 확신과 종교적 신념 안으로 후퇴하지 말고, 그리스도와의 진정한 관계를 맺기 위해 열린 마음을 유지합시다. 때로는 그리스도교 신앙에 있어서, 우리는 그저 “들은 것,” 일반적인 가정 또는 아마도 좋은 의도에서 우리에게 전해졌을 것에 만족할지 모릅니다. 그러나 예수님께서는 우리를 부르십니다. 우리가 개인적인 응답을 하고, 그분을 더 깊이 알고, 항상 새로운 그분과의 만남을 통한 그분과의 우정에 의해 우리 자신이 형성되도록 맡기라고 우리를 부르십니다. 이는 또한 우리에게 낯선 길을 따라가고, 우리가 상상했던 것과 다른 선택을 하라고 요구할지 모릅니다.

This is true both for our personal journey and for the journey of the Church, as well as for our pastoral choices, when we may sometimes think that it is enough simply to continue doing things as we have always done them. Instead, it is important to ask ourselves often: Who is the Lord for me?  Do I truly know him?  What is his Gospel asking of me today?  What steps and what choices am I called to make?

이는 우리 개인의 여정과 교회의 여정에 적용됩니다. 뿐만 아니라 우리가 때로 늘 해오던 대로 계속하는 것이 충분하다고 생각할지 모를 때, 사목적 선택에도 적용됩니다. 중요한 것은 스스로에게 자주 다음과 같은 질문을 하는 것입니다. 나에게 주님은 누구신가? 나는 그분을 진정으로 알고 있는가? 오늘 그분의 복음은 나에게 무엇을 요구하는가? 나는 어떤 조치와 어떤 선택을 하라는 부르심을 받았는가?

Let us invoke the Blessed Virgin Mary, who sought the will of God in her heart through her Son, that she may always guide us along the path of faith.

아드님을 통해 마음으로 하느님의 뜻을 구하셨던 복되신 성모마리아께 언제나 우리를 믿음의 길을 따라 인도해주시도록 청합시다.

Dear brothers and sisters, In my prayers, I often remember the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially in light of the spread of the Ebola epidemic, which is sadly claiming many lives. I encourage on the part of the international community a response that also involves local communities in efforts of prevention, so that many human lives may be saved.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 저는 기도 중에 특히 많은 생명을 앗아가는 에볼라 전염병이 확산되는 상황에 있는 콩고 민주 공화국을 자주 기억합니다. 저는 국제 사회가 지역 사회의 참여를 통한 예방 노력에 힘을 보태어 더 많은 생명을 구할 수 있기를 간절히 바랍니다.

I am also close to the people of the Central African Republic, who are mourning the victims of the collapse at a mine in Zamboyé. May the Lord receive those who have lost their lives and sustain efforts to ensure safety and respect for the law at mining sites.

저는 잠보예 광산 붕괴 사고 희생자들을 애도하는 중앙아프리카공화국 국민들과도 깊은 유대감을 느낍니다. 주님께서 희생자들의 영혼을 영접하시고, 광산 현장에서의 안전과 법치 준수를 위한 노력을 지지해 주시기를 기도합니다.

Tomorrow marks the tenth anniversary of the earthquake that struck central Italy, affecting Lazio, Umbria and the Marche. I pray for the deceased and for their families, as well as for all the communities involved. May faith and solidarity continue to sustain the work of reconstruction.

내일은 이탈리아 중부, 특히 라치오, 움브리아, 마르케 지역을 강타한 지진 발생 10주년입니다. 희생자들과 그 유가족들, 그리고 피해를 입은 모든 공동체를 위해 기도합니다. 믿음과 연대가 재건의 노력을 계속해서 지탱해 주기를 바랍니다.

I greet all of you with affection, Romans and pilgrims from various countries. In particular, I extend a warm welcome to the Primatial Choir of Gniezno Cathedral in Poland; to the seminarians and faculty of the Pontifical North American College; and to the young people from Bormio and Valfurva.
