Summary:
Paul emphasizes that men and women are interdependent in the Lord—though man was created first, both now come from one another and ultimately from God. He appeals to nature and custom, noting that long hair is a woman’s glory and a sign of her covering, while short hair suits a man. Paul concludes that this practice reflects the proper order and that anyone inclined to dispute it should recognize it as the accepted custom among all the churches of God.
Teaching:
In today’s passage, the issue of head coverings is a cultural matter, which can vary depending on the culture. However, the essential truth does not change—the order between man and woman, the order in the home, in the church, and in society.
In Ephesians 5, man and woman are compared to Christ and the Church: the man is to lay down his life for the woman, and the woman is to honor such a man.
This order is not about superiority or inferiority, but about the authority established by God, and this authority creates order. If we recognize Christ as the root of our authority, then we must uphold the order between man and woman that Christ has spoken of within the home.
