Dear brothers and sisters, good afternoon and happy Sunday! Today’s Gospel tells us how Jesus reveals to his disciples the Mystery of his impending Passion. The Messiah, he says, must “go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised” (Mt 16:21).

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 안녕하세요. 즐거운 주일입니다! 오늘 복음은 예수님께서 제자들에게 당신의 임박한 수난의 신비를 어떻게 드러내시는지 우리에게 얘기합니다. 예수님께서는 메시아가 “반드시 예루살렘에 가시어 원로들과 수석 사제들과 율법 학자들에게 많은 고난을 받고 죽임을 당하셨다가 사흗날에 되살아나셔야 한다.”(마태복음 16:21) 고 말씀하십니다.

What he says is a far cry from their expectations of a triumphant and powerful Messiah, with whose help they would defeat and trample their enemies (cf. Ps 108:13).  Already, during the time they had spent with him, they had been amazed by so many of his deeds and words.  Yet this latest message truly goes beyond all expectations. In particular, Peter expresses his disagreement and rebukes Jesus, saying to him: “‘God forbid it, Lord!  This must never happen to you’” (v. 22).

예수님의 이 말씀은 그들의 기대와 너무나 동떨어져 있습니다. 그들의 기대는 승리하시고 강력한 메시아로서, 그분의 도움으로 원수들을 무찌르고 짓밟는 것입니다. (시편 108,12 참조) 그들은 예수님과 함께 지내는 동안, 예수님의 놀라운 행동과 말씀을 셀 수 없이 많이 체험했습니다. 그런데 이 마지막 말씀은 이 모든 기대를 무너뜨리는 말씀입니다. 특히 베드로는 이에 동의하지 않고 예수님께 반박합니다. “맙소사, 주님! 그런 일은 주님께 결코 일어나지 않을 것입니다.”(22절)

Shortly before, Peter had recognized in him “the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” (v. 16) Now, however, surprised and perhaps disappointed by what he hears, he rebukes him, which stands in contrast to the beautiful profession of faith he had just made. He seems to be saying, “Yes, I believe you are the Messiah, but that is not how the world is saved.” His is an outburst of zeal, certainly motivated by sincere love, and yet it gives us something to consider.

방금 전에 베드로는 예수님을 “스승님은 살아 계신 하느님의 아드님 그리스도이십니다.” (16절) 라고 고백하였습니다. 그러나 이제 그는 예수님의 말씀을 듣고 놀라고 어쩌면 실망하여 예수님께 반박합니다. 이는 방금 전 그가 했던 아름다운 신앙 고백과는 대조적입니다. 베드로는 마치 “네, 저는 당신이 메시아임을 믿습니다. 그러나 세상은 그렇게 구원받지 않을 것으로 믿습니다.” 라고 말하는 듯합니다. 베드로의 반응은 분명 진실한 사랑에서 비롯된 열정의 분출입니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그것이 우리에게 생각할 거리를 제시합니다.

For us, too, in fact, it is not always easy to understand and accept God’s ways, especially when they are very far from our own. Then the temptation arises — against all the reasoning of faith — to think that the Lord is the one who is wrong, or worse still, that he is not listening to us or is not concerned about us.  Faced with this uncertainty, Peter, even in his impulsiveness, teaches us two important things.

사실 우리에게도 하느님의 방법을 이해하고 받아들이는 것은 항상 쉽지는 않습니다. 특히 그 방법이 우리자신의 방법과 너무 다를 때에 더 그렇습니다. 그럴 때면 유혹이 고개를 듭니다. - 믿음의 모든 논리에 반하여 - 주님께서 틀리시다고, 더 나아가 우리에게 귀 기울이지 않으시거나, 우리를 걱정하지 않으신다고 생각하는 유혹이 일어납니다. 이러한 불확실성에 직면하여 베드로는 다소 충동적이긴 했지만 우리에게 두 가지 중요한 것을 가르쳐 줍니다.

The first is, even in such moments, never to cease our dialogue with the Lord.  Instead, we are confidently to tell him our difficulty in understanding what he is asking of us.

첫째는, 그러한 순간에도 주님과의 대화를 결코 멈추지 말아야 한다는 것입니다. 오히려 우리는 주님께서 우리에게 요구하시는 바를 이해하는 데 어려움을 느낀다면 주저 없이 그분께 말씀드려야 합니다.

The second is never to judge God’s work, but rather humbly and prayerfully to listen to what he is revealing to us through his actions, even when they do not meet our expectations.

두 번째는 하느님의 일을 결코 판단하지 말고, 오히려 겸손하고 기도하는 마음으로 그분의 행동을 통해 우리에게 무엇을 드러내시는지 귀 기울이는 것입니다. 설령 그 행동이 우리의 기대에 미치지 못하더라도 말입니다.

The greatness of the first of the Apostles is also evident in this. Jesus replies: “Get behind me, Satan!” (v. 23), and explains to him and the other disciples that, to follow in his footsteps, they must deny themselves, take up their crosses, and follow him (cf. v. 24).  Peter will do just that: after listening to him, he will accept the challenge and remain faithful to the words of Christ — whom he has recognized as his Redeemer — for the rest of his life, even unto martyrdom.

사도 중 첫 번째인 베드로 사도의 위대함은 다음에서도 분명히 드러납니다. 예수님께서 베드로에게 “사탄아, 내게서 물러가라.” (23절) 라고 대답하시고, 베드로와 다른 제자들에게 누구든지 내 뒤를 따라오려면, 자신을 버리고 제 십자가를 지고 나를 따라야 한다고 (24절 참조) 말씀하십니다. 베드로 그대로 합니다. 예수님의 말씀을 귀담아 들은 후에, 그 가르침을 받아들이고, 자신이 구원자로 인정한 그리스도의 말씀을 평생 순교에 이르기까지 충실히 지킵니다.

Let us therefore ask the Lord that we, too, in our life of faith and in our prayer, may have the same sincerity as Peter, humbly telling Jesus what we truly feel, even when our hearts are confused. At the same time, may we cultivate Peter’s own docility in accepting what Jesus asks of us beyond our expectations.

그러므로 우리도, 우리의 신앙생활과 기도에서, 마음이 혼란스러울 때에도 우리의 진정한 감정을 예수님께 겸손하게 말씀드리는 베드로와 같은 충실함을 가지도록 주님께 청합시다. 또한 주님께 저희의 기대이상의 것을 요구하시는 예수님의 뜻을 받아들이는 베드로의 순종을 저희가 본받게 해주십사고 기도합시다.

May Mary help us, for she was obedient to God’s plans even at the foot of the cross of her Son Jesus.

아드님, 예수 그리스도의 십자가 아래에서도 하느님의 계획에 순종하셨던 성모 마리아님, 저희를 도와주소서!

After the Angelus:

Dear brothers and sisters, Tragic reports are emerging from Haiti of the horrific massacre carried out in Kenscoff, in which numerous people have lost their lives and others taken hostage. I express my spiritual closeness to the victims and their families, and call for the immediate release of all hostages. I make a heartfelt appeal to all those in positions of authority to take concrete steps in order to ensure the safety of the population and put an end to all forms of violence.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 아이티 켄스코프에서 끔찍한 학살이 자행되어 수많은 사람들이 목숨을 잃고 인질로 잡혔다는 비극적인 소식이 전해지고 있습니다. 희생자들과 그 가족들에게 심심한 위로를 드리며, 모든 인질의 즉각적인 석방을 촉구합니다. 또한 모든 권력자들에게 국민의 안전을 보장하고 모든 형태의 폭력을 종식시키기 위한 구체적인 조치를 취해줄 것을 간절히 호소합니다.

I renew my prayers for those affected by the terrible flood that struck Nepal and Tibet. Let us pray for those who have lost their lives, for the injured, those missing, for the families and rescue workers. May the concern of everyone help to alleviate the suffering and provide the necessary aid to the people affected.

네팔과 티베트를 강타한 끔찍한 홍수로 피해를 입은 모든 분들을 위해 거듭 기도합니다. 목숨을 잃은 분들, 부상자, 실종자, 유가족, 그리고 구조대원들을 위해 우리 모두 기도합시다. 모든 사람들의 관심이 고통을 덜어주고, 피해를 입은 사람들에게 필요한 지원을 제공하는 데 도움이 되기를 바랍니다.

Let us continue to pray for peace.  Saint Augustine, whose feast we celebrated a few days ago, said that peace “is like the miraculous bread multiplied in the hands of the disciples as they broke it and distributed it” (Sermo 357, 2).  May there be an increase in the world of those who courageously break and share the bread of peace, overcoming divisions, promoting justice and practicing forgiveness for the good of all.

평화를 위해 계속 기도합시다. 며칠 전 축일을 지낸 성 아우구스티노는 평화는 “제자들이 빵을 쪼개어 나누어 줄 때 기적적으로 빵이 늘어나는 것과 같다”고 말씀하셨습니다. (설교 357 2) 세상에 용감하게 평화의 빵을 쪼개어 나누고, 분열을 극복하며, 정의를 증진하고, 모두의 유익을 위해 용서를 실천하는 사람들이 더욱 많아지기를 기도합니다.

On Tuesday, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This marks the beginning of the Season of Creation – observed by Christians of various denominations – whose theme this year is “Living Water.”  As I recalled in the Message for this Day, caring for our common home calls for a conversion of heart, so that what has been used to bring about destruction may instead be directed toward life. I invite everyone to join in prayer and action, that we may become channels of the living water of God’s peace, refreshing our wounded world.

화요일은 피조물 보호를 위한 기도의 날입니다. 이는 여러 교파의 그리스도인들이 지키는 창조시기의 시작을 알리는 날이며, 올해의 주제는 “살아있는 물”입니다. 오늘 제가 전한 메시지에서 말씀드렸듯이, 우리의 공동의 보금자리를 돌보는 것은 마음의 변화, 즉 파괴를 초래하는 데 사용되었던 것이 이제는 생명을 향해 나아가도록 하는 변화를 요구합니다. 저는 모든 분들이 기도와 행동에 동참하여, 상처 입은 세상을 새롭게 하는 하느님의 평화의 살아있는 물의 통로가 되기를 간절히 바랍니다.

I greet all of you: the faithful of Castel Gandolfo and pilgrims from various countries.  In particular, I welcome the participants in the “Run to Rome” charity event, the young people who have undertaken the Via Lucis pilgrim route, the group of devotees of Our Lady of Miracles of Corbetta and the motorcyclists here for their traditional annual gathering.
