Summary:
Paul writes to the Corinthians about spiritual gifts, saying he does not want them to be ignorant. He reminds them that when they were unbelievers, they were led astray to mute idols, however they were led. Then he explains that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed,” and that no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. Through these words, Paul teaches that the true work of the Holy Spirit always honors Jesus as Lord, and that any spirit or utterance denying Him cannot come from God.
Teaching:
In the Bible, whenever something is described as “spiritual,” it is always related to the Holy Spirit. The salvation of a person’s soul, the gifts of the Spirit, the power to preach the gospel, and the ability to perform miracles—all are works of the Holy Spirit.
Therefore, in every part of a Christian’s life - faith, church life, and even daily living—the Holy Spirit is the beginning and the end.
When we believe in and follow Jesus, there is true freedom. Obedience and submission to God’s Word may sound passive, but when we truly receive the Word of truth, we find freedom - and through that freedom, we become servants of the Lord and servants to others.
However, if we serve idols, we may think we have freedom through our own will, but in reality, we live as eternal slaves, destined for the same fiery hell where the devil will be cast.
We must listen carefully to the Word of God who speaks to us, and our words must align with His Word. Just as the Word became flesh, our words must become our actions. Those who speak by the Spirit of God - those who speak under the power of the Holy Spirit - will never curse Jesus.
