Summary:
Paul explains that there are different spiritual gifts, ministries, and effects, but they all come from the same Spirit, Lord, and God. Each believer receives a manifestation of the Spirit for the common good—to benefit the whole church, not for personal glory.
Paul lists examples of these gifts: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment of spirits, various kinds of tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Though the gifts differ, they all come from the one and same Spirit, who distributes them individually as He wills.
In essence, the passage emphasizes unity in diversity within the body of Christ - different gifts, but one Spirit working through all for God’s purpose.
Teaching:
The term “gift” (charisma) means a gift given by grace. It refers to something that God bestows as a result of His grace. Therefore, all gracious works received from God can be called gifts.
This includes healing, prophecy, and speaking in tongues—but also wise words given in conversation, discernment to know right from wrong, and even answered prayers. All these are gifts from God.
The term “ministry” (office or position) does not refer to a title or rank, but to a work of service—a task or duty. To “fulfill one’s ministry” means to carry out that work completely, to fill it fully.
The term “effects” (or work) refers to the work God performs among all people - the divine work He accomplishes through each person. It is not limited to the ministry of pastors or missionaries but includes the work entrusted to all holy people of God within the church.
