Summary:
Paul compares the church to a living body made up of many different parts. Though each part is distinct, together they form one unified whole. In the same way, all believers—whether Jew or Greek, slave or free—are joined into one body through the Spirit. Each person has a unique role and function given by God, and no one can say they are not needed or that others are less important.
Just as a body cannot function properly if one part is missing or ignored, the church also cannot thrive unless every member contributes. God arranged each part exactly as He intended, and every member depends on the others. The parts that seem weaker or less honorable are actually treated with special care so that there is no division, but harmony. When one member suffers, everyone shares in the pain; when one is honored, all rejoice together.
Paul ends by reminding believers that they are the body of Christ, and each one of them is a vital part of it. Their diversity of gifts and roles is not a cause for separation but the very expression of God’s design for unity within His people.
Teaching:
The Holy Spirit knew us even before we believed in Jesus. He led us to faith so that when we came to know God, we entered into a covenant—that is what it means to receive the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the Spirit.
By believing in the Word, we “drink” the Holy Spirit; by taking in the Word, we are filled with the Spirit. When we hear the Word, accept it with “Amen,” and confess our faith, the Holy Spirit enters us as though we were drinking living water. God does this so that we may receive salvation through Him.
The way to focus on our unseen Lord Jesus is to focus on the holy people of God within the church. There are those in the church who are often overlooked—people who do not receive much attention, whose sense of worth is low. Yet these are the true treasures of the church: the children, the humble, the poor, the outcast, the imperfect, and the unlearned. Jesus loves them deeply and gives them greater grace. Therefore, we must never despise or ignore them.
We are the body of Christ, and our only head is Jesus. Let us listen carefully to His Word and serve faithfully in the church according to the gifts, callings, and ministries we have each received, so that we may build one another up and bring mutual blessing.
