Revelation 2:18~29 – The background, history and meaning of the church in Thyatira that existed at AD 27~100
○ Thyatira, now known as Akhisar, was an ancient Greek city in Asia Minor. Thyatira, at that time from AD 27 to 100, was a commercial center on the highway leading to the East. Jesus’ words to pottery reflects one of the city's industries, and other big industry was bronze smelting and purple and scarlet dyes.
○ In the Middle Ages (AD 538~1517), Roman Catholic pope and high priests, dressing in purple and scarlet (Ref: Revelation 17:4), persecuted and killed Christians who had adhered to the truth of Jesus Christ for a thousand years.
○ During the second missionary trip in AD 49~52, the Apostle Paul (AD 5-68) met Lydia at Philippi, a dealer of purple cloth, and she was from Thyatira(Acts 16:14). She came back home and might help to build a church there.
○ Another woman in the church in Thyatira misled the church members into sexual immorality and the eating of the food sacrificed to idols, and because of her evil influence, she was nicknamed the second Jezebel, which paired with Jezebel in the chapter 16~21 of <1 Kings> and the chapter 9 of <2 Kings>.
○ Unlike other cities, there were few serious persecution of Christians because it was not the center of pagan gods or Emperor Worship. The manufacturing industry was active in Thyatira, and most of the residents were workers and merchants. This was the problem.
○ Sexual immorality: The problem was that there were some difficulties arising from faith at work (or office). Most of them were handicraft workers, and in order to make a living, they had to give up their faith in a workplace with a clear hierarchy due to the specific nature of the manufacturing industry. And they had to have frequent dinners (eating and drinking) after work, had to eat foods sacrificed and offered to idols and pagan Gods, and had to participate in the second and the third round of dinners such as the intemperance and decadent acts, namely, they fell into sexual immorality such as adultery, fornication and prostitution.
○ The eating of the food sacrificed to idols: In the mid-century(AD 538~1517), in particular, the 11~16th century, the guilds of merchants and handicraft workers flourished. In the case of the handicraft industry, the guild became a group that emphasized the hierarchy of between craftsmen and apprentices based on the apprenticeship system. The acts of the hierarchical order of the guilds were joint dedication services to the gods, joint sacrifices to the gods, joint offerings to the gods, joint meals or joint dinners, joint dinning parties, and joint social community activities. The members of church in Thyatira, which were influenced by these guilds, ate the food sacrificed to idols or pagan gods.
○ No remains of the Thyatira Church and Temple of Apollo: There are no remains of the Thyatira Church, and only the stone pillars and walls of the Thyatira Memorial Church, built around AD 600, remain. There are the ruins of the Temple of Apollo in Akhisar, where Thyatira Church was located, and the most influential god at that time was Apollo, the Sun god. This later led to Emperor Worship, who believed that Apollo was incarnate.
○ Pontifex Maximus and the change of the set Times and the Laws by Roman Catholic: Constantine I (Reigned in 306~337) converted to Christianity in AD 312, but he did not abandon his position as Pontifex Maximus, the high priest for the Sun god, until his death. From this point on, the doctrine of Apollo began to come into the church one by one, and Roman Catholic began to change the truth of Christ one by one. I will explain some examples later, but pls see <Bible Matrix_⑦_20~24> for the persecution of Christians and the change of the set Times and the Laws by Roman Catholic.
