Bible Matrix ⑦: Historical & Scientific Views on Daniel and Revelation
Part 2. Revelation
Revelation 2:18~29 - To the Church in Thyatira, adhered to the truth, but where false prophetess was active
Revelation 2:18~29 – (1) Background and Meaning of Christian Historical Perspectives (AD 538~1,517, The age of Roman Catholic persecution of Churches of Christ, The Dark Age of Religion/The churches that fled into the wilderness)
○ Purple and scarlet - Thyatira's main industry was purple and scarlet dyes. The historical background of Christianity is the Middle Ages (AD 538~1517), and during this millennium the Pope and high priests dressed in purple and scarlet, and persecuted and killed Christians. We can see <Revelation> 17:4 prophesies, “The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet”, here, the woman is the great city (Revelation 17:18) who symbolizes the Holy See or Roman Catholic.
○ The dark age of religion by Roman Catholic - The historical background of Christianity is the Middle Ages, that is, from AD 538 until 1517 when the Reformation movement by Martin Luther (1483~1546) in Germany, approximately one thousand years. This period was the dark age of religion or church by Roman Catholic, namely, <Revelation> 2:18~29 prophesy and deliver the message that the age of the Church, fleeing into the wilderness and deep mountains, would come.
○ Faithful Christians fled into the wilderness & the deep mountains to escape the persecution from Roman Catholic – As I already mentioned about “the persecution of Christians and the change of the set Times and the Laws by Roman Catholic” in <Bible Matrix_⑦_20~24>, all the churches of Christ started equally from AD 313, but the Roman Catholic papacy grew powerful enough to dominate over European kings from AD 392 (Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire) and Roman Catholic papacy rejected the doctrines of the Church of Christ, and they could directly persecute faithful Christians who chose to hold on to the truth of Christ.
☞ In AD 538, Emperor Justinian (reigned AD 527~565) of the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantium Empire) appointed the bishop of the Roman Catholic Church as ‘the corrector of heretics', and the Roman Catholic, under the pretext of eradicating of heretics, imprisoned and executed faithful Christians who refused to follow the instructions and teachings of the Roman Catholic. From AD 538, Roman Catholic joined forces with political power to suppress people's freedom of conscience and freedom of religion. This period is called the Dark Age of religion or church. And faithful Christians fled into the wilderness and the deep mountains in order to escape the persecution from Roman Catholic.
☞ This religious dark age continued until 1517. From this point of view, Jezebel, the false prophetess in the Church of Thyatira, should be Roman Catholic.
(1) Hiding prophets in caves to escape Jezebel - According to <1 Kings> 18:4 and 19:18, around BC 870 to BC 840, because Jezebel in the northern Kingdom of Israel (BC 931 to BC 722), the false prophetess, killed almost all the prophets of LORD God, 100 prophets of LORD God were hidden in caves and 7,000 Israelites who did not worship the god Baal were reserved, like the Christians who fled to the wilderness or the caves in the Middle Ages (AD 538~1517).
(2) The Waldenses hidden in the Alps to escape the persecution from Roman Catholic – A representative example of Christians who escaped persecution from the apostate Roman Catholic Church during the millennium of the Middle Ages and who fled to the wilderness or caves were the Waldensians or Waldenses. They fled to the deep mountains of the Alps from around 1170 and did many Christian works with love, faith, service, perseverance, and a spirit of sacrifice. For example, only the clergy and priests of the Roman Catholic could read the Latin Bible, but they translated it into many languages so that everyone could read it. In addition, Waldensian youths were dispatched to each city in Europe as missionaries for two years. If caught for carrying a Bible, they were executed, so Waldensian missionaries had to memorize all the Bible verses. When they met a soul seeking the truth, they secretly wrote the Bible verses they had memorized on paper and preached the gospel. Each year, 50% of the young missionaries never returned because they were caught, imprisoned, beheaded, or burned at the stake. This missionary work at the risk of the lives of the Waldensian youth continued until the Waldenses were absorbed into the Protestant movement in 1532.
(3) Wycliffe, Hus and Jerome martyred by the Holy See (Roman Catholic) - Entering the late Middle Ages, John Wycliffe (1330~1384) of England began to reform around 1360, and in 1415, 31 years after his death, the Roman Catholic Church held the Council of Constance (1414~18) in Konstanz in Germany, the 16th Ecumenical Council of the Church, there, he was condemned as a heretic and all his writings and books were banned and at the same time burned. In 1428, 44 years after his death, by order of the Pope, Posthumous execution and his bones were burned and scattered in the river.
☞ Also, Jan Hus(John Hus or John Huss, 1370~1415) and Jerome of Prague (1365~1416) of the Czech Republic participated in the reformation, who later were condemned as corrupt heretics at the Council of Constance (1414~18) of the Roman Catholic Church and were sentenced to be burned at the stake, and martyred.
☞ Because of their bloody reformation works, the Reformation movement in the early 16th century was successful.
