Summary:
Paul reminds the Corinthians of the gospel he first preached to them—the message they received, in which they stand, and by which they are saved if they hold firmly to it. He delivers to them what is of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures. He then appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve, afterward to more than five hundred brethren at once, many of whom were still alive, though some had died. He appeared also to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to Paul himself.
Paul describes himself as the least of the apostles and not worthy to be called an apostle because he persecuted the church of God. Yet, by the grace of God, he is what he is, and God’s grace toward him was not in vain. He labored more than all the others—not by his own ability, but by God’s grace with him. Whether through Paul or the others, the message preached was the same, and this is what the Corinthians believed.
Teaching:
“Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.”
It means that whether it’s them or me, or all of you, we share the same faith—because we stand on the same Scripture. The church must have this same faith and walk in the same direction. And the foundation of that faith is the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus rose according to the Scriptures, and according to the Scriptures, He will come again.
