Why don't people believe that I'm single and happy?

Dear Dr. Phil :

I live alone, quite happily, with a dog and cat. I've been married and divorced more than once and haven't been in a relationship for several years. I don't feel as though my life is lacking, and I am very fulfilled with my friends, family and job.

The problem is that no one seems to believe that I could possibly be happy without a man in my life, and they keep trying to set me up with any single man they can think of. I feel like I'm always put in the position of defending my lifestyle. How can I make people respect my choices? 

Dr. Phil responds :

I'm not sure that I can tell you how to make people respect your choices, but I can tell you how to respect your own choices.

For some reason, society does have the preconceived notion that in order to be a whole individual, we have to be half of a couple. Nothing could be further from the truth. I know many single people, whether divorced or never married, who are living full, productive and rewarding lives. If you have a life rich with friends, family and career, you're blessed well beyond millions of people who are married and miserable.

What you have to decide is that you can deal with people worrying about you. As you get older, they may even call you the crazy cat lady who lives down on the corner! (You may want to limit yourself to fewer than ten cats.) At the end of the day, whether or not those people are comfortable with how you're living your life doesn't matter. What matters is whether you're comfortable with it.
