Summary:
Paul argues that if there is no resurrection, then practices like being baptized for the dead would make no sense. He asks why he himself endures danger every hour and faces death daily if the dead are not raised. If the dead are not raised, then it would be reasonable to say, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
He warns the Corinthians not to be deceived, stating, “Bad company corrupts good morals.”
Finally, he urges them to become sober-minded, stop sinning, and notes that some among them have no knowledge of God, saying this to their shame.
Teaching:
We receive baptism and participate in the church life established by the risen Jesus. Today’s passage urges us to reflect on what faith looks like in our present time and what our own lives reveal.
“Dying daily” refers to continually facing danger. Just as Paul confessed that we always carry the death of Jesus in our body so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in us, Paul sought the meaning of death, life, and resurrection in the everyday moments of his life.
Paul says that those who believe in the resurrection do not fear death. When people who hold the hope of resurrection labor with a willingness to die, God’s grace helps make those efforts fruitful.
