POPE LEO XIV, ANGELUS, Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, St Peter’s Square, Sunday, 4 October 2026

Dear brothers and sisters, happy Sunday! The Gospel parable proclaimed in this Sunday’s Liturgy speaks of Jesus’ life and sheds light on the meaning of his mission (cf. Mt 21:33-43). He is the Son of God sent into the world, yet he is rejected by the very people who should have welcomed him with open arms. The One who came to bring salvation is condemned; the One who wishes to give life is put to death. While this leads us to reflect on the many cruelties that plague the world and the history of peoples, Christ’s teaching reveals the ever-greater mercy of his Father.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 복된 주일입니다! 이번 주일 전례에서 선포된 복음의 비유는 예수님의 생애를 이야기하며, 그분 사명의 의미에 빛을 비춥니다. (마태오 21,33-43 참조) 그분께서는 세상에 파견되신 하느님의 아드님이시지만, 정작 그분을 두 팔 벌려 맞아들였어야 할 바로 그 사람들에게 배척당하십니다. 구원을 가져오려고 오신 분이 단죄를 받으시고, 생명을 주고자 하신 분이 죽임을 당하십니다. 이는 우리로 하여금 세상과 인류역사를 괴롭히는 수많은 잔혹함을 묵상하게 하며, 동시에 그리스도의 가르침은 그분 아버지 하느님의 한없이 크신 자비를 드러냅니다.

Indeed, the violent rejection does not thwart God’s will; in his infinite justice, he transforms evil into redemption: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone” (Mt 21:42; cf. Ps 118:22). Jesus himself recalls these words from the Psalm, which celebrates the marvelous work done by the Lord: it is precisely what was cast aside that becomes the foundation that sustains everything. This is how the Almighty guides history, coming to our aid in all our falls: God never discards our lives!

참으로 그 폭력적인 배척은 하느님의 뜻을 좌절시키지는 못합니다. 하느님께서는 당신의 무한한 정의 안에서 악을 구원으로 변화시키십니다. “집 짓는 이들이 내버린 돌, 그 돌이 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었네.” (마태오 21,42; 시편 118,22 참조) 예수님께서도 주님께서 이루신 놀라운 업적을 기념하는 이 시편 말씀을 상기하십니다. 그것은 버림받았던 바로 그것이 모든 것을 지탱하는 기초가 되는 것입니다. 이렇게 전능하신 분께서 역사를 이끄시고, 우리가 넘어질 때마다 우리를 도우러 오십니다. 하느님께서는 결코 우리의 생명을 버리지 않으십니다!

According to the image used in the parable, the vineyard to be cultivated with justice is the Church, which we build up or damage through our choices. In this regard, today — on the eighth centenary of his death — I wish to recall a laborer who worked with great fruitfulness in the Lord’s vineyard: Saint Francis of Assisi, whom Jesus himself asked to repair his Church. Inspired by the Crucified One, Francis first and foremost built his own life upon the foundation of Christ, sharing in his poverty, joy and sufferings, even to the point of receiving the mystical sign of the stigmata. A man of fervent prayer, full of charity toward all, he was an example to the first friars who shared his asceticism as an authentic condition for the reform of the Church. Saint Francis repaired the Church by virtue of his faith in the Lord Jesus, healing the rifts of discord through the witness of fraternal love.

이 비유에 등장하는 이미지에 따르면, 정의로 가꾸어야 할 포도밭은 바로 교회이며, 우리는 우리의 선택을 통해 이 교회를 세우기도 하고 허물기도 합니다. 이러한 맥락에서 - 그의 선종 800주년을 맞는 오늘 - 저는 주님의 포도밭에서 큰 결실을 맺으며 일했던 한 일꾼을 기억하고자 합니다. 그는 바로 예수님께서 직접 당신의 교회를 수리하라고 청하셨던 아시시의 성 프란치스코입니다. 십자가에 못 박히신 분께 영감을 받은 프란치스코는 무엇보다 먼저 그리스도의 가르침을 토대로 자신의 삶을 완전히 바꿔서, 그분의 가난, 기쁨과 고통에 동참하여 마침내 신비로운 그리스도의 오상을 받기에 이르렀습니다. 열렬한 기도의 사람이자 모든 이에게 깊은 사랑을 베풀었던 그는, 교회의 쇄신을 위한 진정한 조건으로서 그의 금욕적인 삶을 함께했던 초기 수도자들에게 모범이었습니다. 성 프란치스코는 주 예수님께 대한 믿음을 바탕으로, 형제적 사랑의 증거를 통해 불화의 균열을 치유함으로써 교회를 수리하였습니다.

Dear friends, the charism of Saint Francis continues to bear fruit even today, after eight centuries. This is attested to, not only by the great and vibrant Franciscan family but also by the many gifts that his spiritual legacy bestows upon the People of God. As we celebrate the Franciscan Jubilee Year, therefore, let us perseveringly ask for the gift of peace and sincerely commit ourselves to building harmony among peoples.

사랑하는 여러분, 성 프란치스코의 카리스마는 8세기가 지난 오늘날에도 여전히 열매를 맺고 있습니다. 이는 크고 활기찬 프란치스코 가족(남여 수도회들, 3회 수도회들, 재속프란치스코회) 뿐만 아니라, 그의 영적 유산이 하느님 백성에게 선사하는 수많은 은사를 통해서도 입증됩니다. 그러므로 우리는 프란치스코 성년을 기념하며, 평화의 은사를 끈기 있게 간청하고 인류의 화합을 이루는 일에 진심으로 헌신합시다.

May the intercession of Mary Most Holy, our Mother, always accompany us in this work. To her we now turn, spiritually united with the faithful gathered at the Shrine of Pompeii to offer the Supplication to the Virgin of the Holy Rosary.

우리의 어머니, 지극히 거룩하신 성모 마리아의 전구가 이 여정의 우리와 한상 함께 하기를 기도합니다. 이제 우리는 폼페이 성모 성지에 모여 ‘묵주기도의 동정녀께 드리는 탄원 기도’를 바치는 신자들과 영적으로 하나 되어 성모님께 기도합시다.

After the Angelus

Dear brothers and sisters, Last Sunday, in Lourdes, I invited everyone to pray the Rosary during this month of October, with the special intention that wars may cease and peace may be built. Among the first to do so were the children, and they are continuing to do so: from 1 to 7 October, “Aid to the Church in Need” is promoting “A Million Children Praying the Rosary” initiative for peace and unity in the world. I wholeheartedly thank all the boys and girls who are joining in this prayer in so many parts of the world.  Let us all follow their example, invoking the intercession of the Virgin Mary so that peoples may be freed from the scourge of war. In particular, let us pray for the Holy Land and for the innocent victims of violence.

사랑하는 형제자매 여러분, 지난 주일 루르드에서 저는 전쟁이 종식되고 평화가 이루어지기를 특별히 지향하며 10월 한 달 동안 모든 분들이 묵주기도를 바치자고 초대했습니다. 가장 먼저 이에 호응한 이들 가운데 어린이들이 있었으며, 그들은 지금도 계속해서 기도하고 있습니다. 10월 1일부터 7일까지 ‘고통 받는 교회 돕기(Aid to the Church in Need)’ 기구는 세계 평화와 일치를 위한 ‘백만 명의 어린이가 바치는 묵주기도’ 운동을 펼치고 있습니다. 전 세계 곳곳에서 이 기도에 동참하는 모든 어린이에게 진심으로 감사를 전합니다. 우리 모두 그들의 모범을 따라, 모든 민족이 전쟁의 참화에서 벗어날 수 있도록 동정 마리아의 전구를 청합시다. 특히 성지와 폭력으로 희생된 무고한 이들을 위해 기도합시다.

In the coming days, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, a meeting will take place in the Vatican for which I have convoked the Heads of the Eastern Catholic Churches and the Presidents of the world’s Episcopal Conferences. It will be a time of synodal discernment for identifying the steps to be taken in order to proclaim the Gospel today among families and the younger generations. I entrust this task to your prayers and, above all, the families who, with God’s help, are a sign of hope and an inestimable treasure for the Church and for society.

머지않아 교황 권고 「사랑의 기쁨(Amoris Laetitia)」 반포 10주년을 맞아, 저는 동방 가톨릭 교회 수장들과 전 세계 주교회의 의장들을 바티칸으로 초청하여 회의를 열 예정입니다. 이 회의는 오늘날 가정과 젊은 세대에게 복음을 선포하기 위해 나아가야 할 길을 모색하는 ‘시노드적 식별’의 시간이 될 것입니다. 저는 이 과업을 여러분의 기도에, 그리고 무엇보다도 하느님의 도우심으로 교회와 사회에 희망의 표징이자 헤아릴 수 없는 보물이 되어 주는 가정들에 맡깁니다.

I am pleased by the many initiatives celebrating the eighth centenary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. In particular, I recall those that took place in Assisi, attended by the highest authorities of the Italian State. I also greet the amateur radio operators of Assisi and Foligno who spread Saint Francis’ message of peace.

아시시의 성 프란치스코 선종 800주년을 기념하는 다양한 행사들을 기쁘게 생각합니다. 특히 이탈리아 국가 최고위 인사들이 참석한 가운데 아시시에서 거행된 행사들을 떠올려 봅니다. 아울러 성 프란치스코의 평화 메시지를 널리 전하는 아시시와 폴리뇨의 아마추어 무선사들에게도 인사를 전합니다.

Now, I extend my greetings to all of you who are present today in Saint Peter’s Square. I welcome the participants in the International Week of Sacred Music, organized by the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music; as well as the faithful from Puente Alto in Santiago, Chile, and the teachers and students of the Gymnasium Sankt Bonaventura in Dillingen, Germany.
