Summary:
Paul says his confidence comes from conducting himself with holiness, godly sincerity, and reliance on God’s grace rather than worldly wisdom, both in his life and in his dealings with the Corinthians. He assures them that he writes only what they can understand and acknowledges that they have partly understood him already.
He expresses hope that the Corinthians will fully understand, so that on the day of the Lord Jesus, they will take pride in one another—just as Paul already takes pride in them.
Teaching:
The Word of God is not something that must be dug into the deepest depths to understand. Scripture is clear. Those who believe this clear Word should also have a clear and straightforward faith. But when faith becomes lukewarm or vague, it is often because the heart has become complicated.
Accepting Scripture as it is written is the foundation of reading the Bible. It is also the foundation of interpreting it. All 66 books of the Bible are like this. When we read the text as it stands, we come to understand God’s plan that flows from His holiness and truthfulness. There is no need to complicate things with theological or philosophical discussions.
Do not make Scripture more complicated than it is. Simply read the passage as it is. When you do, God will give you understanding according to the measure of your faith.
“You will understand until the end; just as you also partially did understand us, that we are your reason to be proud as you also are ours, on the day of our Lord Jesus.”
