Summary
Paul describes how he came to Troas to preach the gospel and found that the Lord had opened a door for ministry, yet he had no rest in his spirit because he did not find Titus there. He therefore left for Macedonia.
Paul then thanks God, who always leads them in triumph in Christ and spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere through them. To those who are being saved, they are a fragrance of life leading to life, but to those who are perishing, a fragrance of death leading to death. Paul acknowledges the weight of this responsibility.
He concludes by contrasting himself and his coworkers with those who peddle God’s word for profit, affirming that they speak sincerely, as from God, in Christ, before God.
Teaching:
The gospel Paul proclaims is also the gospel of the kingdom of heaven, and that kingdom is God’s kingdom that is present among us through Christ. Therefore, the gospel of the kingdom and the gospel of Christ are the same.
The fragrance of knowing Christ is like a sacrifice offered to God. When we live by faith, the name of Christ is revealed through us, and our relationship with Him becomes certain. Knowing Christ is possible only through the gospel, so we should receive God’s Word as it is.
“Before God, in Christ” is one of the greatest themes of Scripture. The Old Testament emphasizes living “before God,” and the New Testament emphasizes living “in Christ.”
We must live with sincere faith before God and in Christ.
