* '평화(peace)'란 무엇인가?

(1) Peace can be a state of harmony of the absence of hostility, a situation in which there is no war

     between countries or groups:

      (평화는 적의가 없는 화합의 상태, 국가 간이나 집단 간에 전쟁이 없는 상황이라 할 수 있다)

      용례: For many years the agreement maintained  peace in Europe.( 여러 해 동안 그 조약이 유럽의 평화를 유지했다)

              Peace was signed betweenthe two coutries.(두 국가 간 평화가 조인됐다)

(2) Peace can be a non-violent way of life, a situation in which people are pleasant and do not cause

    trouble. (평화는 폭력이 아닌 생활 방식, 사람들이 즐겁고 문제를 일으키지 않는 상황이라 할 것이다)

(3) Peace can mean a state of quiet or tranquility--an absence of disturbance or agitation,

       (평화는 조용하고  시끄러움이나 선동이 없는 평안함을 말하는 것이라 할 것이다)  

      용례: A motorcycle roared by, shattering their peace.(오토바이가 큰 소리를 내어서 그들의 평안함을 깨뜨렸다.

              He just wanted to read his newspaper in peace.( 그는 단지 조죵히 신문을 읽기를 원햇다)

              Her mind is at peace. (그녀의 마음은 평화로웠다) 

*  If you want peace, prepare for war. (有備 無患)

   미국 초대 대통령 George Washinton이 1790년 1월, 의회 연설에서 다음과 같이 말했다.

      " To be prepared for war is  the most effectual means of  preserving peace.

        (전쟁에 대비하는 것이 평화를 유지하는 가장 효과가 있는 방법이다)

* There is no peace for the wicked. (악인은 평안이 없다)

    만일 당신이 하기 싫은 일을  아내(또는 남편)로부터 해 달라는 부탁을 받았을 때, 이 속담을 써먹으면 어떨까?  " 아이고,

    나같은 악당은 평안이란 없구먼"이라면서.... 참고로 이 속담의 출처는  구약성서 이사야서 48: 22 ' there is no peace, saith

    the Lord, unto the wicked.'

* The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually to notable peacemakers and visionaries who have

   overcome  violence, conflict  or oppression through their moral leadership, those who have done the

   most or the best work for fraternity between the nations.

     ( 매년  도덕적인 지도력으로 폭력, 분쟁 또는 억압을 극복한 뛰어난 조정자와 창의적인 사람과  국가 간의

       우애를 위해 최대의, 그리고 최선의 노력을 한 사람을에게 노벨평화상을 수여한다)

* Many different theories of 'peace' exist in the world of peace studies, which involves the study of

   conflict resolution,

     ( 분쟁 해결 연구를 포함한 평화연구의 세계에는 많은 평화에 대한 다른 원리들이 존재한다) 

* disarmament and cessation of violence. (무장해제와 폭력의 중지)

               cessation of arms  = cessation of hostilities = 정전, 휴전.  

               cessation= 정지, 중지. 

               arms(복수형)= 군사, 전쟁, 전투, 무력,무기, 

               < arms가 군대 용어로 쓰이면>

                              Order arms! = 세워총!  Pile arms! = 걸어총!  Port arms! =앞에총!   Present arms! = 받들어총!

                              To arms! = 전투준비!   Shoulder arms! = 어깨총!  

               disarmament  < disarm = 무기를 거두다, 무장해제하다.   * dis-는 '반대', '분리'의 뜻을 갖는 접두어.

* The definition of 'peace' can be vary with religion, culture, or subject of study,

   (평회의 정의는 종교와 문화, 또는 학문 과제에 따라 다를 수 있다)

               definition < define = 정의를 내리다. 규정을 내리다.

               religion = 종교.

* Mahatma Gandhi articulated a vision of peace in which justice is a inherent and necessary aspect,

   that peace requires  not only the absence of violence but also the presence of justice

  ( 마하트마 간디는 그 안에 정의가 본래부터 존재하고 필요한 측면인 평회의 비전을 명화기 말하였는데, 그것은 평화가 폭력의 없다는 것

    뿐아니라 정의가 존재한다는 것이라고 햇다) 

* Martin Luther King observed that " True peace is not merely the absence of tention; it is the presence

   of justice."

  ( 마틴 루터 킹은 "참 평화는 단순히 긴장이 없을 뿐아니라  정의가 존재하는 것이다.

* The lion and the calf shall lie down together but the calf won't get much sleep.

    (사자와  송아지가 함께 누울 겆이나, 송아지의 잠자리는 펴안하지 않을 것이다) 

* The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and

   the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.(Bible. Isaiah 11:6)

   ( 늑대도 어린 양과 함께 살 것이다. 그리고 표범이 어린 아이와 함께  잠을 잘 것이다. 또 송아지와 어린 사자와 살찐 가축도

     함께 누을 것이며, 그들을 어린 아이가 인도하리라)

* They shall beat their swords into plough-shares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not

   lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. (Bible, Isaiah 2:4)

   (그들은 칼을 부셔서 쟁기를 만들 것이며, 창을 부셔서 가지를 치는 낫을 만들 것이며,나라와 나라는 서로를 대적하여 칼을

    뽑지 않을 것이며 또한 그들은 더이상 전쟁을 알지 못할 것이니라)

* Peace is not an absence of a war. It is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence,

   confidence, justice. (Benedict de Spinoza)

  ( 평화는  전쟁이 없는 것아 아니다, 구것은덕, 마음의 상태, 자베에 대한 마음씨, 신념, 정의이다)

* The only excuse for war is that we may live in peace unharmed. (Cicero)

  ( 전쟁에 대한 오즉 한 가지 변명은 우리가 모두 다치지 않고 평활게 살 수 았을 거이란 것이다)

* There never was a good war or a bad peace.(Benjamin Franklin)

  ( 선한 전쟁도 없었으며 나쁜 평화도 없었다)

* A bad peace is even worse than war.

  ( 나쁜 평화는 전쟁보다 더 나쁘다)
