아메리칸 조크(15) - 장모를 뒤집어서 매장했어

Jim was plagued by his spiteful mother-in-law who, much to his dismay, lived with the family.

Each morning, just as he was about to leave for work, the mother-in-law would take him to one side and hiss: “If you don’t treat my daughter right after I’m dead, I’ll dig up from the grave and haunt you!”

It was the same when Jim came home for lunch. The mother-in-law would sidle up to him and whisper menacingly: “If you don’t treat my daughter right after I’m dead, I’ll dig up from the grave and haunt you!”

And at night, she would collar him on his way to bed and snarl: “If you don’t treat my daughter right after I’m dead, I’ll dig up from the grave and haunt you!”

He recounted his awful life with the old woman to a friend who, after not seeing Jim for a couple of months, asked him how his mother-in-law was feeling.

She isn’t feeling anything,” said Jim. “She died three weeks ago.”
Aren’t you worried about her ominous threat?” asked the friend.

"Not really,” replied Jim, “but just to be sure, I buried her face down. Let her dig!”

짐은 실망스럽게도 가족과 함께 살고 있는 심술궂은 장모 때문에 애를 먹고 있었다.

아침마다, 그가 직장으로 떠날 때가 되면, 장모는 그를 자기 곁으로 불러서 화난 소리로 낮게 말했다, "만약 내가 죽은 후 자네가 내 딸을 소중히 여기지 않으면, 내가 무덤을 파고 나와서 자네를 괴롭힐 거야!"

짐이 점심을 먹기 위하여 집에 올 때도 똑같았다. 장모는 그에게 가만가만 다가가서 위협적으로 속삭였다, "만약 내가 죽은 후 자네가 내 딸을 소중히 여기지 않으면, 내가 무덤을 파고 나와서 자네를 괴롭힐 거야!"

그리고 밤이 되면, 장모는 그의 멱살을 잡고 침대로 데려가서 심한 잔소리를 하였다, "만약 내가 죽은 후 자네가 내 딸을 소중히 여기지 않으면, 내가 무덤을 파고 나와서 자네를 괴롭힐 거야!"

그는 한 친구에게 늙은 여자와 함께 산다는 게 얼마나 지긋지긋한지 말해준 일이 있는데, 그 친구가 보이지 않다가 두 달 만에 짐을 만나, 짐에게 장모가 어떻게 지내고 있느냐고 물었다.

"장모는 아무것도 느끼지 못하네," 하고 짐이 말했다, "장모는 3주 전에 죽었어."
"너는 장모의 그 섬뜩한 위협이 걱정되지 않니?" 하고 친구가 물었다.

"설마," 하고 짐이 대답하였다, "하지만 확실히 해 두기 위하여, 나는 장모의 얼굴을 아래로 해서 묻었어. 장모더러 어디 파 보라지!"
