분사구문 감각 익히기
분사구의 기본적인 감각은
첫째, 분사는 명사/대명사를 수식하는 형용사 역할이다
Participial phrases always act as adjectives.
분사구는 항상 형용사 역할한다
둘째, 형역 분사구는 2 종류로 현분사는 명사/대명사의 능동적인 상태, 과분사는 수동적인 상태를 설명한다
(dancing girl, broken jar)
셋째, 주어로 쓰인 명사/대명사 수식인 분사구(분사구문)의 경우는
본동작과 분사의 동작 사이에 전후, 동사나 인과관계를 설명한다;
Singing happily, she left the room. 동시
Opening the envolope, he found two concert tickets. 전후
Being too tired, I didn't go out last night. 인과
넷째, 전치사화된 분사구는 전치사구로 이해한다; 명사수식이면 형역, 동사수식이면 부역전구
We’ve talked /here /about it often, including the
persecution of Christians around the world,
the global struggle with Islamic terrorism, and the worldview of those /seeking to kill so many.

Present participles,
verbals ending in -ing, and past participles, verbals that end in -ed
(for regular verbs) or other forms (for irregular verbs),
are combined with complements and modifiers and become part of important phrasal structures.
Participial phrases always act as adjectives.
When they begin a sentence, they are often set off by a comma (as an introductory modifier);
otherwise, participial phrases will be set off by commas if they are parenthetical elements.
[citizens /acting together] can do far more good than a far-off government.
분사구; /acting together
명사구; citizens /acting together
셋째. 분사구는 여전히 명사/대명사 수식이라 그것들과 수식관계를 맺어주어 이해하면 되나
The stone steps, having been worn down by generations of students, needed to be replaced. [modifies "steps"]
Working around the clock, the firefighters finally put out the last of the California brush fires. [modifies "firefighters"]
The pond, frozen over since early December, is now safe for ice-skating. [modifies "pond"]
넷째. 제한적으로 쓰이면 반드시 명사 뒤에 컴마 없이 쓰여 명사구 일부가 되고
비제한적으로 쓰이면 컴마로 분리되되 반드시 주어 수식용 삽입구로 쓰이는 간단한 원리이기 때문이다
제한 분사구:
[The firefighters /working around the clock] got exhausted.
비제한 분사구; 삽입구 역할이라 내용/의미첨가 역할이다
(Working around the clock), the firefighters finally put out the last of the California brush fires. 문두에 쓰인 분사구
The firefighters, (Working around the clock), finally put out the last of the California brush fires. 문중에 쓰인 분사구
The firefighters finally put out the last of the California brush fires, (Working around the clock). 문미에 쓰인 분사구
비제한 삽입구는 추가설명이라 생략해도 문장의 기본 내용이 달라지지 않기에 콤마로 분리한것인데
우리말 해석 처럼 '24시간 진화작업을 한 소방관들' 하면
영어로는 제한/한정 수식어로 되어
'그 한정 수식어로 정의/묘사/설명된 명사'만을 의미하는 이면에는
한정정으로 설명되지 않은 '명사'도 있다는 암시를 내포하기에
[The firefighters /working around the clock] finally put out the last of the California brush fires.
소방관들이 많이 있었지만 그중에 24시간 진화작업을 한 소방관들 만을 특별히 언급한다는 의미라
24시간 일하지 않은 소방관도 있다는 암시가 제한 수식구에 내포되므로
24시간 진화작업을 한 소방관들 '만' 마지막 남은 불을 껏다로 된다
비제한 수식어는 제한과는 반대로 모든 소방관들이 24시간 진화작업을 했다는 의미가 내포되므로
The firefighters, working around the clock, finally put out the last of the California brush fires.
Working around the clock, the firefighters finally put out the last of the California brush fires.
분사가 주어수식이라는 말은 주어의 준동작 상태를 설명한다는 말이고
주어수식상 동시나 전후동작의 경우라
주야로 일하여 불을 껏다는 의미로 나온다
[The reason /for the cancellation] was that a “self-described militia group /from a nearby county posted a video /on Facebook
/threatening / to demonstrate outside the meeting /with guns drawn.”
a “self-described militia group /from a nearby county /threatening / to demonstrate outside the meeting /with guns drawn posted a video /on Facebook.”
Threatening / to demonstrate outside the meeting /with guns drawn,
a “self-described militia group /from a nearby county posted a video /on Facebook.”
Now, no one remotely /acquainted with BreakPoint or the Colson Center
can reasonably accuse us of being indifferent to the
threat /posed by
militant Islamists. We’ve talked /here /about it often, including the
persecution of Christians around the world,
the global struggle with Islamic terrorism, and the worldview of those /seeking to kill so many.
제한용법이니 선행명사 한정수식이다
no one remotely /acquainted with BreakPoint 사귀어 잘 알게된 사람아닌 잘 모르는 사람도 있다
threat /posed by militant Islamists 이슬람 민병대에 의해서 게시된 협박이라 게시되지 않은 협박 얘기가 아니라는 암시
those /seeking to kill so many '죽이기를 추구하는 그들'만을 한정적으로 의미한다는것
이런 경우에만 형용사절로 전환가능하다; those (who are) seeking to kill so many
비제한 용법으로 쓰면 전후나 인과관계가 되므로 같은 내용이 될 수 없기에 달리 써야한다
Not acquainted with BreakPoint or the Colson Center,
someone accuse us of being indifferent to the threat /posed by militant Islamists.
잘 알지도 못하는 때문에 어떤이는 비난했다
이 경우는 인과관계라 부사절로 전환 가능하다
Because some people was not acquainted with BreakPoint or the Colson Center,
they accused us of being indifferent to the threat /posed by militant Islamists.
Having said that, let me be clear. => Since I have said that, let me be clear.
When they begin a sentence, they are often set off by a comma (as an introductory modifier);
otherwise, participial phrases will be set off by commas if they are parenthetical elements.
문두에 쓰이는 분사구는 콤마로 분리된다
그밖의 주어수식 분사구는 삽입구 역할로 콤마로 분리되어 쓰인다
아래 내용은 GMAT 사이트에 나온 내용으로

Good extract on the issue:

Another common error is that students tend to overlook the fact
학습자들이 실상을 관과하는 것이 공통적인 오류이다
that the two actions have to be in a cause-and-effect relationship or a before-and-after sequential relationship.
그 실상이란건 분사구 동작과 본동작이 전후나 인과관계에 있어야 한다는 것이다
Having considerate and loving parents, Mary loves sports and outdoor activities.
Some students tend to think that the function of participle clauses is to incorporate more than one action in a sentence.
They fail to realize that the two actions have to have some relationship, as illustrated in the following:
어떤 영어학습자들은 분사구의 역할이 단지 문장에 동작이 두개 나올 때 사용한다고 생각하나
아래와 같은 상황에서만 분사구가 주어수식으로 쓰일 수 있다
Cause-and-effect relationship: Having considerate parents, she could do whatever she wants.
인과관계; 분사구 동작의 원인으로 본동작의 결과가 나왔다; 숙고해주눈 부모라는 원인 때문에 결과로 주어가 그리했다
Sequential relationship: Having locked the door, I went to sleep.
전후관계; 분사구와 본동작은 전후관계에 있다; 순서상 먼저 문을 잠근 다음에 자러 갔다
Participle
phrases are often used in English,
and you’ll need to understand their
use for all four parts of the International English Language Testing
System (Ielts).
This is a confusing area of grammar for many learners of English.
Learning
how to use participle phrases is made more difficult
because few course
books have a full and clear summary of how they’re formed and used.
미국이나 한국이나 분사에 대한 설명이 충분하지 못하므로 분사 혼란이 있다
Participle form 분사 형태
A
participle is a word that's formed from a verb. It has two main forms:
the present (or active) participle,
and the past (or passive)
participle.
동사로 만든 현분사나 과분사 형태가 있다
현분사; 동사에 ing 를 붙혀 만든다
To form the present
participle, add "ing" to the base verb. For example, the present
participle from the verb "to bore" is "boring."
과분사; 동사의 과거분사형
Past
participles usually have the same ending as past tense verbs (e.g.,
bored). However, with irregular verbs the past participle
form carries a
different ending than the past tense (e.g., gave/given and was/been).
Participle phrases 분사구
*** 영어로는 '분사구문' 이라는 별칭이 없다 ***
Participles
are mainly used as part of a verb form (e.g., "the audience was bored
by the movie") or as an adjective
(e.g., "the bored audience").
Unlike normal adjectives, however, participles can also take on direct objects and form participle phrases
(e.g., "Needing cash, Tong went to the ATM").
일반 형용사와는 달리 분사-형용사는 문장의 구조와 같은 형식으로 쓰인다
"Needing" is a present participle, and "cash" is its direct object. The words "needing cash" form a participle phrase.
This phrase is a shorter way of saying the adverbial clause of reason, "because he needed cash."
분사구로 쓰면 문장을 간략하게 쓸 수 있다
As
participle phrases leave out nouns, pronouns, auxiliary verbs and
conjunctions, they focus on the action that is happening.
They're often
used in writing to reduce wordiness by replacing longer adverbial or
relative clauses.
These phrases also help your writing flow by eliminating choppy or repetitive sentence structures.
절을 분사구로 쓰면
주어나 조동사 또는 접속사를 생략하므로 문장이 간결하고 동작에 촛점을 맞출 수 있다
Reduced adverbial clauses 부사절의 축약형
주의!
***부사절이 분사구로 축약된 경우는 인과/전후 관계상 주어수식의 분사구에 한하고
명사수식 형역 분사구는 형절의 축약형으로 설명이 된다***
If
the subjects of an adverbial clause and the main (or independent)
clause in a sentence are the same,
the adverbial clause may be reduced
to a participle phrase with the same meaning.
만약 주절과 종절의 주어가 같다면 부사절을 분사구로 축약할 수 있다
****축약이 가능하다는거지 서로 같다는 얘기는 아니다****
This
is often done with adverbial clauses showing time and reason
relationships,
but some other types of adverbial clause (condition and
contrast) can also be reduced. There are four main situations:
일반적으로 시간이나 이유관련 부사절이 분사구로 축약될 수 있지만 조건절도 될 수 있다
1. Same time 동시 동작
When the action in the adverbial clause happens at the same time as the action in the main clause,
you can use a participle
phrase for one of the actions.
능동태 문은 현분사구로 고친다
"As Tong was laying his head on the pillow, he could hear someone crying"
can be reduced to
"Laying his head on the pillow, Tong could hear someone crying."
You
can see that the subject of the adverbial clause (Tong) is left out and
made the subject of the main clause,
replacing "he."
The time
conjunction "as" and the auxiliary verb "was" are also deleted. The
present (or active) participle "laying" is left behind.
You follow the same process when the verb in the adverbial clause is in the passive voice.
수동태는 과분사구로 고친다
"When a newspaper photograph is seen close up, it looks like masses of dots."
becomes
"(When) seen close up, a newspaper photograph looks like masses of dots."
This
time, the conjunction "when" can be kept or deleted, depending on your
preference.
The past (or passive) participle "seen" is used.
2. After 사후
If one action happens immediately after another action, you use the participle phrase for the first action.
종절/부절 동작 다음에 본동작이 뒤따르는 경우 분사구로 전환 가능
"After Tong got up, he went to see if his son was alright."
may be shortened to
"(After) getting up, Tong went to see if his son was alright."
The conjunction "after" can be left in or out. The present (active) participle "getting" is used.
3. During 도중
If one action happens in the middle of a longer action, use a participle phrase for the longer action.
긴 본동작의 도중에 종절/부사절 동작이 일어나는 경우 분사구로 전환 가능
"While Tong was walking towards his son's room, he saw a woman crying in the hotel corridor"
becomes
"(While) walking towards his son's room, Tong saw a woman crying in the hotel corridor."
"While" can be left in or removed, as you prefer.
4. Before 사전
When
the action in the adverbial clause happens before the action in the
main clause, you have two ways of making the time relationship clear.
Firstly, you may use the conjunction "after" with the present (active)
participle or the past (passive) participle.
부사절 동작이 주절보다 전에 일아나는 경우 현분사나 과분사구 둘 중 하나로 전환가능
"After Tong had hit a hole in one in the golf tournament, he celebrated with the club members"
can be shortened to
"After hitting a hole in one in the golf tournament, Tong celebrated with the club members."
**** After hitting a hole~ 의 경우 분사구에 접속사가 붙은 형태라 분사구로 부르기는 이상하니
부사절의 축약형이라 부르는게 적당하다 본다
허나 전치사 after + 동명사 = 전치사구는 틀린 명칭이 아니라 하겠다
Always keep the conjunction "after" because it makes the time relationship clear.
Alternatively,
you can use the active perfect participle form (having + past
participle) or the passive perfect participle form (having been + past
participle).
As the example is using the active voice, it would be reduced to:
"Having hit a hole in one in the golf tournament, Tong celebrated with his club members."
There's no need to use "after" with a perfect participle as both would be showing the same time relationship.
분사구에 대과거/과거완료 구조를 쓰면 분사의 동작이 본동작 이전에 일어 났다는 의미라
after 를 쓸 필요가 없고 완벽한 분사구 형태라 분사구 명칭이 당연하다 하겠다
*** 주어를 수식하는 분사구가 문미에 쓰일 수도 있는데
삽입구 역할이므로 컴마로 구분해 주어야 한다
만약 컴마가 없다면 오해소지가 있다
1. Bill talked to the mailman coming up the walk.
2. Bill talked to the mailman, coming up the walk.
1번은 컴마가 없으므로 분사구는 앞 명사인 the mailman 을 수식하는 구조가되어 우체부가 보도로 올라오는 의미고
the mailman (who is) coming up the walk
2번은 컴마가 있으므로 주어수식의 삽입구가 된다
Bill (who is) coming up the walk 즉 빌이 올라오는 경우가 된다
주어수식 분사구면 주어 다음에 삽입구로 쓸 수도 있다
Bill, coming up the walk, talked to the mailman.
결론으로 주어수식 분사구의 경우 문두나 문중 또는 문미 어디든 다 쓸 수 있으나
삽입구 특성상 컴마로 분리해 주어야 한다
주의!
분사구는 삽입구 형태로 쓰이는바
문미에 컴마로 분리되어 쓰이더라도 여전히 주어의 준동작 즉 주어수식이지만
삽입적으로 쓰여 컴마로 분리된 동격구나 형용사절은 선행명사 수식이다
Then we will no longer be like children, tossed around here and there /upon ocean waves,
picked up by every gust of religious teaching /spoken by liars or swindlers or deceivers.
분사구는 명사/대명사와 수식관계를 맺어야 하기에
앞명사인 children 이나 주어인 we 가 분사의 수식대상이 되겠으나
문법상 삽입구로 쓰인 분사구는 주어수식이기에
주어로 해야 의미가 상통한다
Then we (who are) tossed around here and there
/upon ocean waves,
(we who are) picked up by every gust of religious teaching /spoken by liars or swindlers or deceivers.
허나 제한수식어로 쓰인 spoken 은 앞 명사 수식이다
religious teaching (which was)/spoken by liars or swindlers or deceivers
I will still be there with you, carrying you.( I = carrying you.) 주어수식 즉 주어가 분사의 동작자이다
I will still be there with you, who are my people. (you = who are my people) 선행명사 수식 형절
I will still be there with you, my chosen people. (you = my chosen people) 선행명사 수식 동격명사구
Following a catastrophic flood recently which killed 13 people and rendered thousands homeless,
residents learned yet again how unreliable “the government” can be.
An absolute phrase is a group of words that modifies an independent clause as a whole.
An absolute is made up of a noun and its modifiers (which frequently, but not always, include a participle or participial phrase).http://grammar.about.com/od/ab/g/absoluteterm.htm
***독립분사구문이라는 오명을 벗기자***
Mrs. Giles continued, “I couldn’t believe () Jered was willing to give
Turtle /to a stranger, but he tried.” The crying child took
one look at
Turtle and threw it in Jered’s face. Stunned, he picked up Turtle and
lay down on the mat, refusing to move,
"Turtle clutched tightly in his arms" 는 명사+분사구=명사구이고
바로 이 명사구가
독립적으로 쓰여 문장 전체를 수식하니 절대구 혹은 독립명사구로 부사역할이다 한다
