My maternal grandma’s house

Located in the countryside Gyeongbuk Yeongyang

Mom used to drive there with all her family

On weekends during the farming season

Grandma, living alone, gets no help for farming

Let’s get help for her

After hard work for the day

I go out to Grandma’s yard at night

Then shining stars from the night sky talk to me

I try counting stars: one, two, three, four ...

Talk to me, talk to me

Then stars in the night sky talk to me

We soon become close friends to each other

Stars tell a story for me

I tell a story for them

Working hard during the day

Talking to stars at night

Stars have become my best friends

No getting angry

No sulking

No falling out

Stars in the night sky

Probably THE BEST for me

Appreciation Review

“Although a star is commonly known as a ‘star’ in English, the English word ‘star’ actually refers only to a fixed star. Just as stars were divided into fixed stars and planets in the culture of Chinese character, stars were also divided into fixed stars and wandering stars in ancient Greece. The poet says stars are the best friend. It’s because stars show ‘unchanging homeostasis.’

The stars the poet has in mind are always fixed in the same place and do not change.

Unlike his friends who get angry, sulk, and fall out, stars are always willing to be his unchanging friends.

Things will be changing.

However, if countless stars in the night sky do not change forever and stay close to him, there’ll be probably nothing to be desired in the world.

Nothing’s gonna change their friendship for each other.

감상평

별이 영어로 star라고 일반적으로 알려져 있지만, 사실 영단어 star는 항성만을 뜻한다. 한자문화권에서 별을 항성과 행성으로 나눴던 것처럼, 고대 그리스에서도 별을 고정된 별과 떠도는 별로 구분했는데, 이게 전해져 오다가 행성은 떠돌이라는 뜻의 planet이라는 이름이 붙고, 항성은 그냥 star라고 부르게 되었다. 그래서 천문학에서 star는 오직 항성만을 뜻하며, 행성은 star가 아니라 planet이다. -나무위키-

시인이 별 동무가 으뜸이라고 노래한 것은 변하지 않는 항상성 때문입니다.

시인이 생각하는 별은 늘 같은 자리에 고정되어 있어 변하지 않습니다.

화내고

토라지고

사이가 틀어지는

다른 친구들과 달리

별은 늘 변함없는 친구가 되어줍니다.

세상만사 다 변해가지만

셀 수 없이 많은 밤하늘의 별들이

항상 변함없이

다 나의 친구로 남아준다면

세상 부러울 것이 없을 것입니다.

그 어떤 것도 우리의 우정을 바꾸지 못할 것입니다.

경북 영양 외할머니댁

농사철 주말이면

우리 어머니 어김없이

경기도 안산에서 차를 몰고

식구들 다 데리고 찾아가지요

혼자 사시는 외할머니 일손이 없다며

주말에는 우리 식구들 모두 외할머니댁에 가서

일을 도와드리지요

하루 일을 마치고 외할머니댁 마당에 나와

밤하늘을 보면 별들이 내게 말을 걸지요

별 하나 별 둘 별 셋 별 넷

내게 자꾸 말을 걸면

나도 어느새 별들과 동무가 되어

별 동무에게 내 얘기를 해 주지요

별 동무의 얘기를 들어 주지요

외할머니댁에 가서 낮에는 일하고

밤에는 별들과 놀고 별들과 얘기 나누다 보니

별 동무가 최고지요

화내는 일 토라지는 일 사이가 틀어지는 일이 없는

별 동무가 으뜸이지요
