Questions 41 through 43 refer to the following conversation.
W: I need to hire a temporary secretary. My regular secretary has a vacation coming up.
M: I thought I saw two in your office last time I was there. What happened to the other one?
W: Oh, you mean Rick. He’s out sick. He’s been in the hospital for five days now.
M: That’s too bad. Will he be there much longer? I know you’re coming up to your busy season.
W: The nurse said he could go home tomorrow. But he’s still quite weak and will be out of work for a while longer.
Questions 44 through 46 refer to the following conversation.
M: How long will you be staying in Bombay?
W: Until Thursday. I have reservations at the Continental Hotel.
M: And the purpose of your visit is…?
W: I’m here on business. I work for a company called Madison Technology. Do you want to see my card?
M: No, that won’t be necessary. Pick up your baggage in Baggage Claim, then go through that door over there for Customs. Please have your passport or other identification ready to show the customs officer.
W: Thanks. Will someone be searching through my bags, or do you have a machine that does that?
M: All baggage is hand-checked.
Questions 47 through 49 refer to the following conversation.
M: You installed that dishwasher yourself? You didn’t hire a plumber?
W: Actually, my brother did it for me. He owed me a favor. Anyhow, now I don’t have to wash dished by hand anymore.
M: That’s great. Did it take him long to install the machine? Ispent about two days trying to figure ours out before I hired some help.
W: it didn’t take him too long. Only about four or five hours I’d say.
M: Well, I guess you must be glad to have it with your kids home for the summer.
W: Yes. I used to spend at least an hour a day washing dished. Now my kids are more willing to help out with the loading and emptying.
Questions 50 through 52 refer to the following conversation.
M: They took a survey last month to see how many people watched the Olympics on TV. The results were published this week. Did you see them?
W: No, I haven’t read the paper all week. We watched a bit of the Olympics this year, but only the events we were interested in.
M: That’s what most people did, according to the survey. I know I never watch an event unless I’m interested in it. I could never watch curling.
W: Me neither. I think most people watch at least some of the Olympics.
M: You’d be surprised. Only 33 percent of the population watched at any given time. I’ll bet that number changed when it was an important hockey game.
W: Even I watched the hockey games, and I don’t know much about the sport.
Questions 53 through 55 refer to the following conversation.
M: it’s great that you’re taking up jogging. Just be careful to wear the right shoes.
W: Of course. I bought some tip-of-the-line running shoes. I’ve had it with foot doctors.
M: I know what you mean. It’s really hard to book an appointment, and when you finally get in to see them, they rarely tell you anything you don’t already know.
W: You go jogging in the field behind the high school, don’t you?
M: Every morning. I’m going tomorrow at five-thirty. Will you join me?
W: You must be kidding. I’ll wait till a decent hour like seven or seven-thirty.
Questions 56 through 58 refer to the following conversation.
M: Have you seen my newspaper anywhere? It arrived today, didn’t it?
W: I’m sorry, Mr. Chen. It was delivered before *:00 this morning, but the office manager borrowed it.
M: Tell him I don’t mind if he keeps the soccer scores. All Ireally want is the financial section.
W: I’ll ask his assistant to send it down right away.
M: Great. I’m almost ready to take my coffee break, and I’d like to have something to read.
Questions 59 through 61 refer to the following conversation.
W: As usual, we’ll close the shop for two days after the holidays.
M: Will you and your husband be going on vacation yourselves?
W: No, we always take inventory during the shutdown. We have to take a look at what we have in stock before the nice weather kicks in.
M: It must take a lot of work to go through all of those office supplies.
W: We do the same thing every year, so it’s a pretty standard procedure. The hardest part is finding places to put things when they arrive.
Questions 62 through 64 refer to the following conversation.
M: I know you’ve decided to invest in real estate, but I think you should wait a bit. It could be a big risk.
W: I’ll watch it for a month or two and then decide. But I want to get rich before I’m old.
M: Yes, but you could lose if you’re not careful. I lost a lot of money in the stock market last year.
W: Well, I guess you just didn’t make smart investments. I have a financial planner who I trust. I never make any decisions without first consulting him.
Questions 65 through 67 refer to the following conversation.
M: you may not believe this, but postal rates have gone up again.
W: Again? That’s the second time this year.
M: Well, they’re threatening to raise them once again in another six months. Soon it’ll cost over a dollar just to mail a post card.
W: Well, not for a while yet. Stamps for postcards will still be under 50 cents even with the price hike. It’s the packages that will end up costing so much.
Questions 68 through 70 refer to the following conversation.
M: I just met your new employee today. How long has he been working for you?
W: Just a few weeks. He’s very friendly and gets along with everyone, but he’s not very good with debits and credits.
M: Perhaps you should send him to school for a few months’ training. I think the local community college offers that kind of course.
W: There’s not enough time. The office is understaffed already.
M: It will be better in the long run if your staff is properly trained. Studies show that 50 percent of employees quit within three months if they don’t receive proper training.
W: You’re probably right, but I’m afraid we’re just too busy right now. Perhaps in a few months things will settle down and we can consider enrolling him in some courses.
PART 4
Questions 71 through 73 refer to the following weather report.
This is Terrance Stevens with your Kingston weather report. We have been experiencing unseasonable weather throughout the month of April with very little rainfall and minimal cloud cover. The blue skies and warm temperatures have had us questioning whether summer was going to arrive before spring this year. This is the mildest and driest April on record for over 15 years. However, for the upcoming week, we advise you to carry an umbrella every morning. The rainy season will begin today. Afternoons will be dry and sunny, but if you take a walk, be home early; rains will begin again in t도 evening and continue through the night and morning. While the rain is good news for farmers and gardeners, some local citizens were hoping it might hold off a little longer. The annual bike-for-charity event is scheduled to start at 8:00 A.M. tomorrow morning, rain or shine. Though bikers will probably get off to a wet start, the roads should dry just in time for them to start coming through the finish line. The first few bikes generally roll in sometime around 1:00 P.M.
Questions 74 through 76 refer to the following weather report.
Something strange has happened at least once every year at about this same time, and this year is no exception. Two reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) were registered with police last week by two local residents. The man and woman, both of Harris Drive in Sydney, claim to have seen three spaceships land on their farm and then take off again a few minutes later. They described the spaceships as white and box shaped. After an initial survey of the land, no physical damage was reported. Police are investigating. Last year, Allan and Sue Reins, also of Harris Drive, went public with their UFO sighting. The couple was widely criticized by local citizens.
Questions 77 through 79 refer to the following weather announcement.
Power company reserves are extremely low at present due to the prolonged hear wave this area has been experiencing. The 채쇼 has hit record temperatures four days in a row with the thermometer reaching 40 degrees Celsius. In addition, the city's air pollution alert is higher than it has ever been before. To combat the heat, people are running their fans and air conditioners night and day. However, if we don't all work to conserve energy, local utility workers say all power reserves will be used up by the end of the month. This has never happened before in our city, and we all need to work together to prevent a power crisis. City officials are therefore requesting that businesses only use their cooling systems in the afternoon and that private homes use their in the evening and early morning hours. Retirement homes, hospitals, and schools are exempt from this request and should continue hours. Your full cooperation will be appreciated.
Questions 80 through 82 refer to the following weather report.
In a strange twist of events yesterday, a man actually bit a dog. According to observers, a black stray dog was lying in the sun near a bus stop when a city bus stopped to let passengers off. A dentist dressed in a red raincoat got off the bus and accidentally stepped on the dog's tail. The dog immediately proceeded to wrap his teeth around the man's leg in anger. By all accounts, only by biting the dog on the head could the victim get him to release his hold. Both dentist and dog are reported to be doing fine after short visits to their respective doctors. The dog has been placed in a New Jersey shelter, but it is unknown whether or not it will be adopted.
Questions 83 through 85 refer to the following weather report.
The meteorologist's report that came to our radio announcer's desk this morning reads; Inclement weather ahead. Precipitation imminent. Our translation; Another storm coming. Rain likely to happen without delay. This disappointing report comes as a surprise considering yesterday's blue skies and balmy weather. Our photographers caught people all over town yesterday leaving the office a few hours early to enjoy the beautiful afternoon weather. Before yesterday we'd experienced 14 consecutive days of rain and only a few hours of sun. Though the rain has been great for the flowers and trees, we have had little opportunity to enjoy the blooming gardens in the past few weeks. Fortunately, next week they're calling for record highs and sunshine. With a summer that seems like it might never arrive, that's something everyone has been waiting to hear. So it looks like you mat need to get your umbrellas out one more time. but despite the precipitation records we have set this spring, there's hope that this rain won't last forever after all. We will keep you posted on any further developments.
