Summary
Paul commands believers not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, because righteousness and lawlessness, light and darkness, Christ and Belial, faith and unbelief have no true fellowship. God’s people are His temple, where He dwells and walks among them. Therefore, believers are called to separate themselves from what is unclean and to live in holiness. God promises that He will receive them, be their Father, and claim them as His sons and daughters.
Teaching:
Looking at today’s passage, the problem in the Corinthian church was that they did not fully receive the gospel Paul preached, but instead accepted something else. This “other gospel” was completely different from Paul’s gospel, yet it entered the church. It was a gospel opposed to the true one - like light and darkness, the temple and idols, righteousness and lawlessness.
Because we are God’s temple and God’s people, we must depart from what is unclean. We are not only God’s temple but also His children, and therefore we must be distinguished from the children of the world. The passage emphasizes separation and the necessity of leaving what is defiled.
Now that we have learned what the church should be like and how individuals should live, let us preserve the purity of the Word, not be shaken to the left or the right, and continue faithfully on the path we are called to walk.
