Good evening everyone. It's going to be Kerry and Edwards for the Democrats versus Bush and Cheney. Senator Kerry made the announcement in Pittsburgh.
"I'm pleased to announce that, with your help, the next vice president of the United States of America will be Senator John Edwards from North Carolina."
After he failed to win the Democratic nomination, Senator Edwards went on campaigning to be the number two. Senator Kerry has clearly come to the conclusion that Edwards and Kerry will work as a team.
The announcement made in downtown Pittsburgh ended weeks of speculation and secret meetings. "I have chosen a man who understands and defends the values of America."
The Kerry campaign says it chose Edwards because he brings energy and enthusiasm to the ticket. And they quickly produced this ad to capitalize on it.
"Kerry, Edwards, a new team for a new America."
With his southern accent, and son-of-a-mill worker biography, he may very well appeal to rural voters, who the democrats badly need. Edwards who ran a positive, populist campaign was the last man standing against Kerry in the Democratic primaries.
"The truth is we live in a country where there are two different Americas: One for families who get whatever they need, whenever they want it, and then one for everybody else."
Ever since, Democrats in both the rank in file and the establishment have clamored for Kerry to give Edwards the nod. But there is a drawback, one Kerry has previously pointed out himself: Edwards lacks foreign policy experience.
The Kerry campaign today denied long-standing reports that the two Senators don't have a good relationship. But, no one went so far as to say their relationship is a warm one.
After the Kerrys and Edwards make their first joint public appearance tomorrow morning, they take off on a cross country trip and, Peter, they will be hitting such battle ground states as Ohio, Florida, New Mexico and West Virginia.
