<P>• Do you know what holiday is coming up? 너 무슨 휴일이 다가 오고 있는지 아니? 즉 너 조금 있으면 무슨 날인지 아니? 라는 뜻이죠. 여기서 Coming up 은 ‘To be happening soon’ 즉 ‘(어떤 일이) 발생하다’는 의미입니다. 미국 텔레비전 방송에서 ‘Coming up next’라는 말 많이 들을 수 있는 데요, ‘Coming up next’는 ‘곧이어~ 이 방송됩니다’라는 뜻입니다.</P>
<P>• Do you know what Christmas is about? 넌 크리스마스가 무슨 날인지 아니? 이 문장은 ‘Do you know? (넌 아니?)’+ What is Christmas about? (크리스마스가 무슨 날이니?) 이 두 문장이 합해 진 문장인데요, 이 두 문장을 하나로 만들 때는 Do you know 뒤에 오는 What is Christmas about에서 동사 (is) 와 주어 (Christmas) 의 순서를 바꾸시면 됩니다. 그래서 Do you know what Christmas is about? 하시면 됩니다. 예를 들어, 넌 그녀의 생일이 언제인지 아니? 를 영어로 하면, 넌 아니 (Do you know?) 와 그녀의 생일이 언제니? (When is her birthday?) 이 두 문장을 하나로 합치면 되죠. 이 때 뒤에 오는 When is her birthday 에서 동사 (is) 와 주어 (her birthday) 의 순서를 바꾸시면 됩니다. 그래서 Do you know when her birthday is? 하면 넌 그녀의 생일이 언제인지 아니? 라는 뜻이죠. </P>

When 이 문장 제일 앞에 나올 때, 즉 ‘의문 부사’로 쓰일 때는 ‘언제’ 라는 의미죠. 그래서 ‘네 생일이 언제니?’ 영어로 하면 ‘when is your birthday?’ 하시면 됩니다. 하지만 본문에서처럼 when이 문장 중간에 오면 ‘~ 때’ 의 의미라는 것 꼭 기억해 두세요.<BR>예를 들어 ‘When are you going to wash up and go to bed?는 ‘너 언제 씻고 잘거니?’ 라는 뜻으로 When이 문장 앞에 와서, ‘언제’라는 의미로 쓰였죠. 반면에 ‘Are you leaving when she is leaving?’ 은 ‘는 그녀가 떠날 때 떠날 거니?’ 라는 뜻으로, When이 문장 중간에 와서, ‘~는 때’ 의 의미로 쓰였습니다. 이렇게 when이 문장 젤 앞에 올 때 (의문 부사로 쓰일 때)와 중간에 올 때 (접속사로 쓰일 때) 뜻이 다르다는 것 꼭 기억해 두세요.</P>
<P>• Reindeer: 순록. Reindeer는 단수, 복수 모두 Reindeer입니다. 즉 순록 두 마리를 나타낼 때도 뒤에 ‘s’를 넣지 않고, 그냥 ‘reindeer’ 이라고 할 수 있죠. 이처럼 단수와 복수의 형태가 같은 단어에는, Sheep, fish, deer 등이 있습니다.</P>
<P>• Be born : 태어나다<BR>A: Do you know what time you were born? 넌 몇 시에 태어났는지 아니?<BR>B: I’m not exactly sure but I was born around 6 o’clock in the morning. 정확히는 모르지만 오전 6시쯤 태어났어.</P>
<P>• I will give all my presents to the poor. 나는 가난한 사람에게 내가 받은 선물을 다 줄 거에요. 여기서 the poor 은 가난한 사람들을 의미합니다. 이렇게 ‘The + 형용사’는 ‘형용사 한 사람들’을 의미합니다. 또 이 문장은 I will give the poor (간접 목적어) all my presents(직접 목적어)로 바꿔서 말할 수도 있다는 것 꼭 기억해 두세요.<BR>이렇게 give 뒤에는 간접 목적어 + 직접 목적어 순으로 쓰고, 직접 목적어가 앞에 나올 때는 to 간접목적어 순으로 쓰입니다. <BR>예를 들어 ‘I will give my students the test. 하면 ‘나는 학생들에게 시험을 낼 것이다’는 뜻인데요, 이 문장은 ‘I will give the test to my students.’로 바꿀 수도 있습니다.</P>
