Summary:
Paul explains that his earlier letter was written not merely to address the wrongdoer or the one wronged, but to reveal the Corinthians’ earnest care before God. Their response brought comfort to Paul and even greater joy through Titus, whose spirit was refreshed by their obedience, humility, and respect. Paul rejoices that his confidence in them was not misplaced and expresses full assurance and gladness in their faithful response.
Teaching:
We must have concern, and in the process of that concern we must feel remorse and come to repentance. However, those who practice unrighteousness persist in unrighteousness to the end. Therefore, the church must exercise discipline toward such people, and we must be willing to accept that discipline.
Paul’s trust in the Corinthian church is ultimately trust in God. This is the kind of faith we should have regarding the church. People cannot change other people - only God can do that. Therefore, all of you must place yourselves in God’s hands. Rely on God, who has given us the gospel.
