Summary
Paul points to the churches of Macedonia as an example of God’s grace at work. Despite severe trials and deep poverty, their abundant joy overflowed in rich generosity. They gave willingly - beyond their ability - begging for the privilege of participating in support for the people if God. Most importantly, they first gave themselves to the Lord and then to Paul and his coworkers by the will of God.
Teaching:
Overflowing joy comes when we live out God’s story.
Do not give offerings in order to draw attention to yourself. If that is your motive, it is better not to give at all. Money is a serious matter, and God takes offerings, gifts, and contributions seriously. The Macedonians first gave themselves to the Lord, and not only to the Lord but also, according to God’s will, to Paul.
Therefore, give according to God’s will, serve according to God’s will, and live according to God’s will. This is the path we are called to walk.
