Moderation (People who lost the ship)
Sunday, March 14, 2010
It is always good to keep to the middle way. We already know the truth, but we are easily immoderate and even we forget the truth.
Here is the story that you must keep in mind. It is quoted from Talmud.
There was a ship in the middle of the stormy sea. The captain decided to anchor the ship until the sea became calm. The ship anchored at a beautiful island. The scenery in the island was beyond description. (I know this expression is such a cliché.TT) There were beautiful flowers blooming out, fruits dangling on the trees and birds singing cheerfully.
The passengers acted very differently in front of the same scenery. The passengers were divvied up into five groups according to their behaviors.
The first group didn’t get off the ship. They thought ‘We don’t know when the ship will leave the island.’ They gave up sightseeing because they were afraid they were going to lose the ship.
The second group enjoyed sightseeing at the near place from the ship. They ate fresh fruits enough, enjoyed gentle winds and returned to the ship.
The third group deeply indulged in the scenery. They strolled too far from the ship. They had to return to the ship in a hurry. As a result, they lost their belongings.
The forth group were the passenger who didn’t care at all even when the ship raised the anchor to leave the island. They thought, ‘The captain won’t leave us alone.’ To the dismay of the forth group, the ship started leaving the island. They had to rush off to catch the ship in a flurry. Fortunately, they were able to board the ship, but they all severely hurt because they bumped into rocks in the sea while swimming. Anyway, they were relieved.
The worst group was the fifth group. They couldn’t hear the ship whistle taking a rest too long. Even though they shouted, the ship didn’t come to them. They lost the ship. They couldn’t return to the place they had to go to and they had to live in the island for the rest of their life.
We know you cannot go wrong with the second group’s choice. I’m always asking myself, “Do you exert your effort and give yourself a reward when you have done well”? What about you?
