성품이 엄격하지 못하면 용기가 없고  엄숙하면 용기가 있다.

  If one′s nature lacks strictness, one lacks courage; if one is solemn one possesses courage.

용감한 사람은 착하지 못함을 보면 급히 이를 물리치며  義(의)롭지 못함을 보면 이를 급히 물리친다.

  A courageous person swiftly repels ungoodness upon seeing it,

   and swiftly rejects unrighteousness upon witnessing it.

엄숙한 것은 용기의 근원이 된다.

  Solemnity serves as the root of courage.

性不嚴則無勇하고 嚴則有勇이라 (성불엄즉무용하고 엄즉유용이라)

  If one′s nature lacks solemnity, one has no courage;

  if one is solemn, one possesses courage.

勇者는 見不善急祛하며 (용자는 견불선급거하며)

  A courageous person, upon seeing what is not good, repels it swiftly;

見不信急祛하며 見不義急祛하나니 (견불신급거하며 견불의급거하나니)

  Upon seeing untrustworthiness, repels it swiftly,

  and upon seeing unrighteousness, repels it swiftly.

嚴은 勇之源也니라. (엄은 용지원야니라.)

  Solemnity is the source of courage.

 [Explanation, 풀이]

용기는 실천의 기본 요소이다.

  Courage is the fundamental element of practice.

실천될 수 없는 이론은 오직 시간과 정력을 낭비하게 할뿐 실제로는 아무 것에도 도움이 안되는 것이다.

  A theory that cannot be put into practice only wastes time and energy,

  offering no real benefit in practice.

따라서 그 어떤 이론도 용기로 현실에서 나타나지 않는 한 쓸모없는 공론에 불과하다.

  Therefore, no matter what the theory may be, unless it manifests in reality through courage,

   it is nothing more than useless empty talk. 

그 용기의 근원이 곧 엄숙함이다.

  The very source of that courage is solemnity.

뒤집어 말하면 용기의 賊(적)은 경박함이라고 할 수 있다.

  Conversely, the enemy(Jeok) of courage can be said to be levity(frivolity).

경박한 사람은 용기가 없으며  실천을 이루지 못하지만 대신 말은 없는 용기를 충당하고도 남을 만큼 유창한 것이다.

  Frivolous people lack courage and fail to achieve action,

  yet their words are eloquent enough to more than make up for the courage they lack.
