Summary
Paul explains that the ministry of giving meets the practical needs of the holy people of God and overflows in thanksgiving to God. Through this service, believers prove the sincerity of their confession of the gospel and demonstrate generous sharing, which leads others to glorify God. Those who receive the gift respond with prayer and deep affection for the givers, and Paul concludes by praising God for His indescribable gift.
Teaching:
The very act of giving a collection is itself God’s grace. It is God’s grace both for the Jerusalem church that receives help through the collection, and for the Corinthian church that is able to give.
The phrase “indescribable gift” means a gift that cannot be fully expressed in words. It is best understood as a comprehensive “gift.” Giving is our response to the grace that God has given us. And the model for giving is Jesus Himself—He saves us, makes us sufficient, strengthens us, and gives us peace.
Because we believe in such a Jesus, we too must live in that way for the sake of others. To win people, we must be diligent and willing to pour out what is ours.
Through giving, we give thanks for God’s grace, demonstrate our faith, and reveal the glory of God.
